With a weather window on the horizon, I softened up the wife with tales of my hovering and mopping prowess. Friday 19th was forecast to settle down in the evening, so I popped out to a local mark in the afternoon to recce the water colour after the winds on Wed/Thurs. quite mucky and dirty for he first 10 yards or so, but clean after that. Arrived at the mark and was happy to see the water was clearing up nicely. Within a couple of casts I had a wee herring in the net. Nothing for an hour or so after that. But spirits were up as there were a fair few slabs of trout leaping, but course, leaping the other side of the channel. A thud, then the buzz of the drag. A feisty one, who didn't like being diverted into my net. Shortly afterwards, another thud and "some" drag.
An early start the next Day, I got to bed nice and early. 12ish. Arrived at the mark, and my jaw just dropped. Not a ripple, anywhere around me. You could see sandeels breaking the surface 20-30 yards out. It was indeed heaven. How long would it last? The water was noticeably warmer also, which was nice. Trout could been seen and heard jumping into distance.
Shortly after the turn, thud thud thud. A nice one around 3 1/2lbs, 43cm. Again, shortly afterwards, thud thud buzz, nothing. Thud thud, buzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. This one was going nowhere. Jumping and leaping, then drilling out, and down into the crystal clear depths. Thought it may be just an angry one, but saw it flanking and sparking out again. Not much longer than the previous one, but much deeper.
Casting out after that, thinking.....
