Boat Insurance

Hi lads

Can anyone put me on to an insurance company that will cover my boat while its on a swinging mooring in cork harbour,

I was talking to a chap today that told me he used to cover his boat with the same people that covered his home but he said he stopped it last year because it jumped from around €200 to over €400,

Was thinking that this jump could be to do with the container loads of engines leaving Ireland over the past few years,

Any ideas on where I should try for the best price

Porthcawl I've been with for a few years,great to deal with and cheapest I could get with a great package..
Heard of a few that had to make claims with no problems

I contacted the people i have my car insured with and they said they will get me a quote tomorrow they said they deal with Allianz for boats so thats that one covered,

dont go through a broker. deal directly on line with allianz i made this mistake and paid 330 euros for a policy that cost 199 directly from allianz from a broker. a 130 euros for doing nothing. fill out a form on line and get a quote

I went to the I-4-B and got an instant quote of £121.30 from Allianz, and £163 from Lloyds, BUT when i read the list of rules it said nothing about leaving the boat on swinging moorings,

In rule #3 it state's

The vessel must either be kept ashore in a locked building or moored in a boatyard or secured
compound or home driveway.

maybe i should contact them again and explain.

Just got onto them and explained that it will be on a swinging mooring, as Jim said these and I-4-Boats seem to work together, in fact it say's on the portcawl site that if instant cover is needed just go to there sister site I-4-B,

Takes upto 24 hours for them to either contact by phone or email,

Even though I know you are not out to depress me more than I already am I have to tell that you have,

Only kidding dude but that thought had crossed my mind and it kinda worries me, you see the boat is on the water most of the year so any other type of cover except maybe cover for ”third party” where I accidentally hurt one of the crew when they catch bigger fish than me is of no use really, I could be wrong about that and I stand to be corrected,

If the quote for the swinging mooring come back over the €400 I will be leaning toward getting a tracker fitted,

I been told that I could have one fitted for around €200 but then I suppose I need to pay each year to get the text message sent, I hear they send then each week to let you know your boat is where you left it and another if it has been moved.

My mate had one on his SUV when he got a message saying it had been stolen, at the time he was sitting in his living room which overlooks his drive where he could see his motor still sitting there, he hadn’t drove it since the night before, this was the second time they did this,

I hope things have improved with the system since 3 years ago.

I got the quote from Portcawl of £115 which works out at €132 so I thought great stuff till I seen its just third party and in the small print said the boat has to be moored “fore and aft”

I did leave a little message saying the boat will be on a swinging mooring at Aghada in cork harbour but they worded it as Aghada harbour Co Cork,

Are you covered fully comp, if your boat vanishes overnight “God forbid” will they sort you for your loss,

I sent them more details this time and asked for a quote on full comp cover, should get that sometime tomorrow.

It's only third party if u have the boat on the mooring during the winter months..
It's comprehensive from the 1st Apr- 1st Oct..
I paid 150 sterling for 15000 sterling cover on my warrior 175..
It says nothing about how the boat is to be moored,just says swinging mooring to be checked each year..

Thanks for taking the time to put that up, they got back to me today with this message

“I can advise that we have quoted on a fully comp basis with permission for the boat to be moored on a fore and aft between the dates 01/04 to 01/11”

This is after I explained that the boat is on a swinging mooring with 2 ropes coming off the front of the boat and fixed to the buoy with shackles,

They sent me out the quote by post but it aint arrived yet, I see you have built up a no claims bonus This has me thinking that Etihad hit the nail on the head when he said they wont take on new comers on swinging moorings,

I hate the idea of getting back on to them and explaining it all over again… I just had a mental picture of the guy at the office reading my emails and pulling his hair out

Me thinks I should sack the insurance idea for now cause its doing my head in, thanks for the links tips and help lads I will let ye know if I ever get it sorted

Looks like I’m sorted,

The broker I have my car insured with rang this morning and asked a few more questions then told me it would cost €245... I said sweet I will be up to sort you tomorrow morning,

About an hour later I got a call from a very nice lady at Portcawl, she asked if I would be taking the cover offered by them and had I any questions,

So I told her about the swinging moorings… she took about 30 seconds to check and said “there’s no problem I will put it on your file”

She saved me about €110 that I’m sure to put to good use this weekend
