if its for general bait fishing any of the known brands will be fine its like mono some are thicker some are limper some wear better than others ,spider wire,power pro ,ect are all pretty good i got a spool in lidle once and even that was ok for bait fishing ,it was a bit thicker for its bs but performed ok

if its for lure fishing i think you might be better staying with the top brands

I did a piece in Irish Angler recently about braid…It is a subject that intrigues me!
Without labouring the point – Choose your braid depending on what you want the braid to do for you. If you are beach fishing you may want abrasion resistance and strength and the “No Stretch”, then you can be less fussy about your braid as diameter will be less important.

If you are fishing and want the benefit that lower diameter gives you then you must be more discerning about the braid you purchase.
There is no set format to how braid is stated on the packet. EU sold braid is generally expressed in Absolute breaking strain. American braid is generally expressed in Lbs test. The Americans bring in a knot to the equation and therefore their line tends to be much thicker for the stated diameter than an EU braid. However many braids test to double their stated strength. The bottom line here is to be wary when ordering on line -The 20lb American labelled braid may have a diameter more like a 50 or 60lb braid (off the top of my head!). Most braids are thicker than the stated diameter…braid is not round so it is difficult to get a proper measurement.
So do you buy (These are the specs for Sufix 832):

EU: 8.2kg 0.13mm
or
US 10lb 0.20mm

Imagine you order 20lb US – it is going to be fairly thick!

I use Strikepro Strikewire most of the time. I have tried many different high quality braids over the last couple of years and always tend to be happiest with StrikePro Strikewire (9kg 0.13mm). I was pleased with Sufix 832 recently too (18lb 0.13mm). I want the benefit of thin braid but need the benefit of some strength to pull through snags.
There is a lot to be said for touchy feely in the shop!

There are lots of forgeries on line. It is all braid so you are not doing too bad! Much of the time it is four strand sold as eight strand and such like. You are in the lap of the gods regarding diameters etc.

All that said....there is nothing like braid!

if its for general shore fishing don't use Braid!

i use braid for shore bait fishing and have landed plenty of fine fish on it ,the increase in feel during a fight with a big fish is 10 times the fun

if you know how to use the drag on your reel you wont have any problems

found it Will, take it as Gospel!

braid is a must for boat fishing because you are holding the rod in your hand and also for drifting you can read the bottom and use very small diameter lines to over come water drag ,this also applies to spinning your in direct contact with the fish.
But as regards beach fishing the only thing braid is good for is a bit of excitement (magnifying small bites) great for pleasure fishing but when your looking for doubles and tribbles mono out fishes braid every time .I am also a fixed spool man and have 15 spare spools in my tackle box for three or four different situations, out of the 15 i have one spool of braid and the only reason i have that is if i am fishing beside someone else using it i would have no choice only to use it to prevent them cutting me off. I do know what i'm talking about i have tested two rods with exact bait and rigs one with braid and one without ,in a situation where there was plenty of fish results were tribble every cast without fail on mono and singles, doubles and the odd tribble with the braid i hope this really answers your question "braid is a waste of time for competition beach fishing"

thanx kstaff coz match fishing i was thinking of but saying that there is the time when youre scratching for fish when they are scarce and maybe braid would have an advantage over mono??????

Use braid if you want don't let Staffo pressure you out of it, if a top angler was saying fish naked, he would be doing it

it's all opinions and if you like the feel of braid stick with it, but its worth having a Spare spool loaded with mono if your having a tough time with the braid. Brand wise power pro is very hard to beat. I use both mono and braid from the shore but I do like the feel of braid when fighting a fish, it really makes you feel like you have direct contact.

If you want to try it Keith I can tie on your leader and give you a few tips on how to use it!it sounds to me like you have a braid phobia with some careful counseling I think we could work this out for you if all fails we can get your prescription increased by 20mg for a few months ?

i think i get some anyways just for the pleasure angling o like the post says just in case someone else is using next to me, look out bellmullet the boys will be back in sept woo hoo anhope the weather is kinda this year and we can fish the western side

I use power pro and diawa tournement both have never let me down,the diawa is slightly stiffer than the pro,very few wind knots in both
