county down rock fishing sunday 3rd march

#1 Post by Al and Jordan »

People: myself and junior

Duration: 4 hours

Tide: 2 hours either side of high water

Weather: overcast, dry and minimal winds

Bait: slug-gos on 1oz and 3oz lead heads and a 60g german sprat lure

Rigs:

Results: pollack and coalfish

Report: well only a short one this weekend. i had a charity do to go to on satuardy evening in the ballyclare comrades social club and it was a great night. plenty of money was raised for a kids charity and plenty of pints were sank
so after 5 hours kip i was up and feulled up on coffee and ready to go out and try for a few fish. i had some furniture to deliver to my mates house in annalong in the afternoon, so we just lifted a spinning rod each and a hand full of lures and off we went :P
so after passing through newcastle we stopped of at one of our summer spots near bloody bridge to try for a bit. i was back out with my replacement rod after the disaster with the last one exploding mid cast
but as ever the customer service at belfast angling center was second to none. i explained what happened to the last one and harry replaced it on the spot for me. top bloke 8) 8) so it was out to get christined with a few fish :D
the fishing was slow enough with us only getting a coalfish and a pollack each, but they were better fish than what we've been getting of the beaches recently. both of my fish fell to a slug-go on 1oz lead heads and jordan got his coalfish on a german sprat lure. the best method seemed to be just giving 5 or so quick turns of the reel and letting them flutter down through the water. all the fish hit them as they were dropping down. we both lost a better fish each, with jordans being pretty decent stripping line off his reel before going ground into the kelp
but hey, thats just the way it goes
for once i got the heaviest fish of the session and junior did'nt beat me for a change :D :D :D
not a bad way to kill 4 hours on a sunday afternoon with just a spinning rod each and a pocket full of lures :P :P :P

Nice, ye just cant beat lure fishing. Counting the weeks to Kerry and a fishfest. No bait rods, just two spinning rods and a whole heap of lures.

seems to be picking up man :P
when we were back up at the motor putting the rods away an elderly man was sitting in the car with his missus having a pack lunch. he came over for a chat and was telling me there was bass getting caught up around greencastle :o :o . we never usually venture up that far. but it might be worth a bit of exploration. the fella seemed to know his stuff and seemed genuine. might be worth a session or 2  :P :P

thats exactly how i had been using the slug-go's. but i find you get a better action out of them with the lead heads. you feel every twitch and when you give the rod tip little flicks it almost makes the lure dance. looks far more life like as opposed to having the lead 18 inches or so from the lure, but both methods will catch you fish. it's just down to what you feel confident with  :D :D

thanks man, no i just put them on the way they come out of the packet. what i have noticed is that them more of the lure you have behind the hook, the better the action you get from it

ahh man, jealous ! sadly our last trip to kerry was a bust. between foul weather and netted beaches we never even got a bass  gonna stay away from the dingle side next time and try another area. ahh well, we live and learn  :P :P
