Sligo SWFF 25.2.2013

#1 Post by davyp »

People:me

Duration: 3 is hrs

Tide: arrived about 40 mins before low

Weather:bright, but windy and cold

Bait:holo sandeel fly

Results:

tides didn't really suit last week with lows falling in darkness, and slept in on sunday morning due to an encounter with some cheap vino the night before  but got it together today and skived off college for a wee session. despite a lack of wind in town the estuary had a fair breeze, making casting awkward, but i battled away. - had the life scared out of me when a seal swirled in the water about 8 feet in front of me. fishing was slow nothing happening and very cold - i was nearly going to pack it in when a slight drop in the wind made casting a little easier ( the wind was blowing from the left - tide pushing in from the right - makes for awkward fishing! ) finally hooked into a fish - fought like an absolute demon - had him on for a good while before i seen him and was starting to think it was a really good fish - when i got him in he was smaller than he felt and it turned out he was actually hookd in the gill cover - explained the fight - saying that still my best fish this year :D guy beside me had a crackin fish close on 3lb and two small ones in rapid succession about 100 yards down the channel - but that was it for me, and with a slightly soggy butt from leaky waders i called it a day.

(FWIW, i have a licence, where i am fishing is open for sea-trout and all fish are logged )

Kgarr - the fly was the same as these guys -

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-Saltwater-E ... 5d31de7f49

the guy beside me that got the decent fish was using a green sandeel pattern - about 3 1/2 inches long

had another hour at them today but no joy

cheers Al - , im delighted - its been really class, wish i had fished this mark last year - i spent days and days fishing another mark last feb and only managed one skinny sea trout. if i ever get my act together i would really like to try this new spot with some live sandeel or pollack fry - id say it would be deadly

well done davy,,seems to be a good few trout around this time of the year,it can only lead to healthier and beefier trout for the summer.

Yea Pete - almost all the seatrout i have had so far at this spot have been in great condition for this time of year, the one in the pic in the other report is the only one i have had that was in poor condition and showed clear signs of recent spawning - it says a lot for how rich the feeding must be in the area
