East Cork Fatty and 2 PB's 19.01.13

#1 Post by joebhoy »

People: Me and Conger

Duration: 5pm - 1am

Tide: Rising - Slack Tide

Weather: Cold but nice light winds

Bait: Crab, razor and more crab

Rigs: Flapper

Results:cod

Report:
Got the green card from the missus so decided to head south once again to try for a bearded one before they head for the hills. As usual Conger was up for the cup so a plan was hatched to leave Limerick around lunch, arriving in Co Cork just before darkness fell. Stopped off on the way to pick up a few bits n bobs in Halfway Angling before collecting some fresh peelers :D

When we arrived we found a few folks fishing around the estuary. Nobody was confident of catching as they felt that the large volume of fresh water would have chased off any fish. After numerous debates about where best to fish we decided to go with our gut instinct and head away from the estuary to fish a beach mark that we felt would just be on the edge of the brackish water. Quick bite to eat then line in the water just as the tide began to flood.

Both of us were fishing a pulley at distance and a flapper in close with juicey large peelers. For the first hour we never had a touch and had given it a half hour before we would move. Literally minutes later my rod in close started to show interest with the end result being a fat codling about 3-4lbs (new PB....!). Gave a great wee account of itself considering its size and was definitely one for the pot. Blank saved happy days.......

A short time later congers rod started bouncing which produced a couple of very fat codling in the 2-3lb bracket. The fishing at this point was spectacular with lots of bites keeping the hands warm and the head sharp..... After another whopper of a bite another codling was landed again about 2lb, this wee cod put up a scrap which defied its size......

As i was rebaiting i had a serious bite in close which came in some way before the snood snapped. This felt like the biggest fish of the night and left me completely disgusted that i had missed it. Not sure what it was but it gave some amount of pull and put a serious bend in the AFAW 6. This pattern continued for some time with some serious bites but missed fish.

I noticed a timid bite on the flapper rod and picked up the rod to feel for a fish......the fish decided to swallow and move away from the beach which felt seriously solid. The cod was landed and tipped the scales at 7lb, my biggest cod ever and my second PB in one session.......... :D Poor conger nearly had a heart attack when he copped that it was lip hooked :D

The bites died a little until we were packing up about 1am when Congers rods began attempting to pogo out of the stand. Conger had the fish on but it parted company with the hook in the surf- Cue mass expletives and one seriously unhappy Limerick man.

All in all it was a great session with some decent cod landed, 2 new PB and good solid bites all night.

Joe you underestimating " unhappy limerick man" i was like a demon, but 'twas my own fault  all in all it was a great session, it really paid off where we set up :D :D My first glimpse of the big one in the surf was " oh f%$k", and more so when it came off the hook as I lifted it onto the beach   I do believe I would have being going for a swim if that one was in the water :?
I'll stick up more photos later
