Bass Nets in Tramore

I know this has been written about in the past but it must be highlighted on all possible ocassions.
There is still a major issue with the netting of Bass in the Tramore area. On Thur 27th April nets were clearly seen in Saleens and close to the Pier. These we must assume are belonging to the same individual who is netting the area on an ongoing basis and is doing so without fear of being caught and prosecuted. For anyone who wants to report it, take the time now to contact the Southern Regional Fisheries Board. Tel: 052 23624 and try to get a number which will be contactable when you see the nets and not the office number. Unless the anglers fishing the area where nets are take the time to report these issues we will never be able to put a stop to this illegal fishing. Remember the angler can only take two bass per day, this poacher has no limit to the amount of BOXES he takes any day.

Thanks for the info. I've reported the matter. Thankfully there have also been 3 reports on the same matter and the inspector and protection officer is looking into the matter.

I saw a program on the Westbury Hotel restaurant (Russell Room) on the City Channel, I think. They featured one of their signature dishes, Fillet of Sea Bass. The fillets were clearly too big to be from farmed bass, and I wondered where they were getting them from. I emailed the hotel, but despite their promise to answer queries in 24 hrs, have receive no reply.

Poachers will only poach if there is someone to sell them to.

If anyone else would like to try and get an answer from them, please do.

You may be right Neil... They do farm Sea Bass fairly big is some places though. I agree that most farmed bass are around the 1lb - 3lbs mark

I've never seen a farmed bass larger than a lb or two. They are so slow growing that it's not economic to grow them any bigger. I may be wrong, but I've a feeling that farmed bass must be below a certain size in Ireland, to distinguish them from wild fish (presuming the've passed the 43 cm limit, but poachers wouldn't care about that)

Well sharky,
I'm the one who got the ball rolling on these or at least the one in the Saleens. Spent an hour with the bailiffs today showing them exactly where the net was. Pity they did not get down last night when I rang them as the net was removed at low water last night.
All you can do is ring them the rest is up to them :twisted:

There is a new indoor market on the quay in waterford close to the bus terminal. I was in there last week to see what was in the fish shop inside the door. There were about 3 Bass all about 3/4 lbs, no way were they farmed. I didn't ask where they came from, but I believe the shop belongs to another fish merchant in Ballybricken. Interesting to know where the bass were sourced as they are not all being imported.!!!!!!!
Contact the Southern Fisheries and get a number you can ring at night or when you see the nets. Instant action and the observations of the public is the only way to stop the poachers.
