Donegal Bay and Sligo beach, 4th and 5th January 2013

#1 Post by johnwest »

People:Me

Duration:4 hrs on 4th, 4.5 hrs on 5th.

Tide:Flooding on both days.

Weather:Mild, mostly dry.

Bait:Lug, mackerel, prawn.

Rigs:3 hook flappers, 1 up - 1 down.

Results: 4th ; 5 pouting and 1 pollack. 5th ; 1 flounder and 1 small coalfish.

Report:
4th January; First trips of 2013 and some very ordinary fishing. The mild weather coaxed me out and digging some lugworm was definitely the most active hour of the last 2 weeks. It was still light when I set up so I wasn't expecting much for a while and that was how it was, no bites for about 2.5 hours. By now it was well into darkness and at last a determined bite produced a small pollack (29 cm) from the roughish ground. A prolonged biteless spell followed before a welcome pouting sampled a lugworm. This was a well marked stripey one, quite different from the double shot which followed from the sandy ground at distance. You could almost be forgiven for thinking they were two different species. A couple more small pouting showed up before things went quiet again so 1 pollack and 5 pouting got 2013 off to a start. Still no sign of any whiting.
5th January; This got off to a grey miserable start with increasingly heavy rain in the morning but thankfully the rain eased off as I was setting up. The beach had a nice surf, not much wind and no weed or surfers in sight. However there weren't too many hungry fish about either, it was after about 2 hours that the first bite registered with a 32cm flounder on mackerel. Nothing more until a small 22cm coalfish took a bait and that was it for the night. Hopefully things will improve....
