Tullan Strand, Bundoran 27-12-12

#1 Post by gerty86 »

People:Myself and Brother

Duration:1.30-4.30pm

Tide:low tide around 11.30

Weather:nice

Bait:fresh and frozen lug, frozen mackerel and sandeel

Rigs:2 and 3 hook flappers

Results:one small turbot

Report: I was home in Sligo for the Christmas and had told the younger brother I'd bring him for a bit of sea fishing over the holidays. I was really looking forward to a session myself as it had been a while since I was out and I had got a few new bits of gear I wanted to test out.

The plan was to try and get to the beach a couple of hours before low tide which was always going to be a tough ask following Stephan's Day celebrations. Woke up about 11ish, only about 3 hours late, started to pack the car and checked the tackle box only to realise I had no rigs made up.. Already behind time we had to spend the next hour making a few flappers.

We reached the mark about 1.30 armed with a few fresh lug worms we managed to dig the day before as well as some frozen lug, mac and sandeel. I was fishing one rod at distance and another close constantly varying the baits and distances while the bro had one rod for scratching close in..

Within five minutes of my first cast, I was into a small turbot close in. It fell to a fresh lug and mac combo. What a start! I had seriously high hopes of a very productive session, however that was to be the only fish of the day. I had one other fish that I lost on the way in and unfortunately the bro didn't manage anything.

I haven't done a huge amount of beach fishing around Sligo and that was the first time I ever fished Tullan. It wasn't the most comfortable session I have ever had.. The tide was pushing us back up the beach fairly quickly and caught us out once and ended up filling my tackle box with water! Still it was good to be out and that was my first ever turbot.. Pity the weather was so bad the rest of the time or I would have fitted in at least another session at some stage.

Unlucky on the single fish ,I'm quite surprized you didn't turn up a few good flounder we were there a couple of weeks back and we had flounder in the 40s.....On the same day you were there we were at rossnowlagh which was pretty poor also

The tide can be a bitch there alright. I've seen plenty of tackle boxes swamped during comps there. I'm very surprised the fishing was poor. Like cathal said there was loads of fish on it a few weeks ago. How far up the beach did you go, usually better about ten minutes walk up the beach.

Cheers for the replies lads. I was surprised I only got the one fish as well... I probably should have used only the one rod and given it my full attention instead of trying to look after two and constantly having to keep an eye on the tide.

Hi Brian. What is a roller rig? I was using flappers with a regular lead that allowed the rigs to move about in the surf.. Is it the same principle?

Hi Shane. We walked about five minutes up the beach and set up there.. Never fished it before so was just trying to pick a spot that looked somewhat suitable!

Was out there on sunday before christmas eve, ended with few large flounders, couple of sea trouts and two smal turbot , have to say tide wasn't in right position so didn't go well, however at the right condition this beach can produce quite large flounder,
anyway fair play to you atleast you didn't blank
Spesies 2012/ flounder, turbot, colie, whiting, thornback ray, dogfish, pollack, ballan wrasse, corcwing wrasse, dab, cod, sea trout, mackerel, smooth hound
