People: Just me

Duration: 8.30pm to 3.00am

Tide:high tide 12.20am

Weather:over cast, and dry

Bait:squid, frozen mackerel, brinned mackerel, razor fish, sandeel

Rigs:various

Results: first whiting from beach fishing, and 1 flounder

Report
Living in cork city, drove and arrived at youghal beach at 7.00pm on Sunday, 3 guys from the north (down for the weekend) were set up and fishing in front of the car park- was talking to them for a while. Set up close enough to them and was fishing at about 8.00pm. Also was a group further down the beach in a comp.
For the first 2 hours nothing but 2 crabs  . Then got a hefty bite on a full small squid on the beachcaster, felt like a dead weight- lost whatever it was in the surf maybe a ray? The guys beside me caught 2 during next few hours.
At around 11.30 caught my first whiting from the beach :) , tells ya how much fishing I have done on the beach. At 12.30 caught a nice flounder close in, on my light mackerel rod, put up a good fight. Kept fishing till 3.00 am to use up the bait but no more joy. Got no bites on the brinned mackerel- anybody else try this as bait before with any good results?

That was a great effort for the fish that you got,and the fact that you got a reply from one of the lads that you met in youghal.

Hi Mr Mackerels, I'm not quite sure what you mean by brinned mackerel, is it tinned mackerel in brine? Years ago before we had a freezer, we used to preserve mackerel fillets in containers of salt water with plenty of salt lying at the bottom to ensure it was saturated. We used the mackerel in winter when pike fshing and caught pike on it. When casting out, you could see an oilslick on the surface where the bait landed. We also caught dogfish the following summer ( not much else to catch at that spot ) so it does work. So what size was the flounder? Regards, JW.

Good to get a bit of fishing in :) Fished beside the carpark/ nearest to the town- the competition was on the far side. Brinned the mackerel myself, layer mackerel covered with a layer of salt(no refrigerated)- was supposed to eat them but chickened out.... curious to see if i can catch anything with it...
