Donegal Bay, 16/11/2012

#1 Post by johnwest »

People:Me

Duration:5.5hrs

Tide:Last of the ebb and 5hrs flooding.

Weather:Light breeze, dull with plenty of light rain.

Bait:Frozen lug and mackerel, prawns.

Rigs:2 hook flapper and 1 up 1 down.

Results:2 flounder, 1 sea trout and 1 turbot.

Report:
I arrived at my chosen spot on the beach with about half an hour of the ebb tide left, the 10 min tramp warming me up nicely. First cast produced a nice plump 31 cm flounder on a prawn bait, the flounder are fattening up well at the moment. Second cast produced an even nicer 35cm flounder, again to prawn bait. With 2 decent flounder in 2 casts, I thought I was in for a productive session but as low water arrived and the tide turned, the flounder seemed to turn off completely. Next time here I'll try the ebbing tide for 3-4 hrs as I have found other beaches in the area seem to fish better on the ebb. A couple of hours later I had a good lively bite and hit a fish which gave a few kicks before parting company, probably a sea trout. This suspicion was reinforced a short while later when a 33 cm sea trout took a mackerel strip as I was retrieving. Around half tide there was a lovely surf with a series of nice tables but the flounder remained un-interested. Finally however a turbot showed up to mackerel strip and that was it. All the fish were taken at distance, nothing in close at all.
The rain had left the sand very wet and the surf produced lots of "foambergs" which blew up the beach looking like ice floes, strange!
