Stuck with bass fishing in Dungarvan

#1 Post by standerus »

Hi
I've recently moved from Roscommon to Dungarvan. Hurrah said when I heard where my next stop will be, finally maybe I'll catch a bass or maybe even two?
But - for last 3 weeks I was fishing almost every day. Usually around the Abbey, at the mouth of the river. Not even a touch...
Any advice on bass fishing there? Which tides should I be fishing? Usually I fish LW +-2hrs. The other problem is that my time is limited to fishing from 6pm, so its rather dark and cold ;) ... I've heard, that best bass fishing is around the dark, but... I'm not sure if it applies to autumn fishing as well?
Any advice would be welcommed. Strictly C&R, I'm more in to photos then meat.

Do you only fish theone spot? To be honest if your after bass get down to the beaches and strands when they have a surf put a big razor, lug or crab bait in or around the third breaker and cross your fingers;-)

Is that a Shimnao Vengence Sea Bass rod you are using there? What is it like?

Yes, exactly - it is the longer, heavier model - 20-60 and 240cm. It works perfect, the only cons is the spacing of the rings on the blank - something is wrong, it is not casting, as it could. I have the feeling, that the first ring should be a bit closer to the reel and a bit larger.
But - this rod costs around 30 euros, so... If it's not the best deal of my life, I hope that it's only "so far" :D
No problems with pacyfing bass around 60-70cm, and rod stil has some reserve, but rod is still able to cast light jigs of around 10g to satysfying distance. I'm not sure, if when buying again, I wouldn't go for lighter - 10-50g model.
David from Arklow uses the same - he recommnded this rod for me and AFAIK he landed 12lb bass on it this summer?
Of course, one day I'll go for some better, more expensive, posh, completly not required or justified  , as for most of pollock/bass/mackrel it's rather fine.
What is important to me - this rod is sensitive enough for jig/soft lures fishing.
