Reef fishing Fuengirola, Costa Del Sol, 18/09/12

#1 Post by jgraham768 »

Was on holiday last week in the south of Spain and had planned to do some tuna angling on a charter with four others, the plan fell through and would've been €750 between myself and a friend to get the boat for a day. We instead decided to do a half day of reef fishing and were told we could get a small yellowfin If we landed on the mackerel.
And land on the mackerel we did! Spent two hours getting huge mackerel 2-3lb, hoping for some joeys to live bait for tuna and dead bait for conger. Four of the biggest macks were gutted and fillet for a lunch breal, these mackerel were about 15 inches long and fat as pigs! I'd compare them to a salmon, they were monsters! Had a few joeys then put on a live bait rig had no luck on any of them.
My mate then had a mack flapper for conger but what happened was not expected, the rod tip was tipping away all the time and he was told not to strike as it was just small fry nibbling at the bait, then it stopped altogether! After ten minutes he reeled up to see if the bait was still there. A massive bend in the rod as he tried reeling up but it wasn't nodding or jumping, snagged right? Wrong, after fifteen minutes of slow careful reeling ha landed a big black canister with shells and all sorts inside in it, it was on the deck a minute when something inside started moving and out slid an octopuss. A gallas ending to a good days fishing.

Pictures to follow when I get back to laptop.
A bad days fishing is still better then a good day at the office.
