5/6lb mullet ballycotton pier co. cork...

was caught on the 20/8/2012

the hunt was on for a few days targeting mullet @ ballycotton pier, co. cork as u know mullet are a very cautious fish, few days previous to this i hooked one and it snapped off..............

so i set off to ballycotton pier again yesterday, we actualy went targeting little ballan's, we hit few from the pier and low and behold the mullet started to show, so i down sized my gear, two 3gram splits, and a size 6 aberdeen, a little sliver of mack and just let it trickle along the surface of the water.....they were so sketchy man, coming up tasting the bait spitting it back out, coming up right next to it and turning away at the last second........so i waited patiently, set my drag very free and waited for him to take.......and boy did he take.

tightened my spool and struck into him.....he went NUTS...bucking and diving..i walked the length of the wall to the shingle beachy part to land him safely there it was a ballycotton mullet.

and just to add to the banter i went back there today and caught another.......of 4lb

This is a novelty entry, not an attempt to win, not that it could because these fish werent caught by angling with rod and line. Caught with kiddies nets in rockpools. Just throwing it in as it might interest mullet anglers.

4 fish caught in a rockpool at Garron Point, Co Antrim on 26th August with kids nets. 2 at 4" and 3.75" . 2 more at 1 inch long each. They are tiny mullet -the anatomy and fin configuration is correct. Scaling cant be made out yet on the really tiny ones. There are plenty of mullet around here but theres as much chance of winning euromillions as finding bass. The only other fish that they could be confused with. The mouths on the wee ones are mullet gubs too.

It is August and I got some mullet albeit very small ones. I dont know what order I have these in. Its always good to see juveniles of species you usually only see as more mature fish.

Cheers.

The sea was very coloured with a bit of a break on the surface.
Things were very slow ( a few pups) untill it got dark.
As darkness fell we started to get the odd dogfish and the pups were still shredding baits.
Shortly after 1am Daithi got a nice smoothie about 4lb, this was followed by another 2 about 15-20 mins apart.
I got a good bite about 2.30, left it to develop but rod the remained motionless.
A couple of minutes later I noticed a few nudges on the rod tip.
I lifted into the fish and thought to myself " this is a nice fish"..
When reeling the fish in I said to myself this isnt a smoothie, must be a clonker of a dogfish.
Landed the fish on the beach, a cracking little Ray with a wingspan of about 45 cm.
I was more than delighted with my first Ray of the year, my first Ray ever in actuall fact.
All in all it was a cracking evening for fishing, the weather was kind, the seas were calm, and the Ray were obliging.
