When the bass are scarce - the ould reliables!

#1 Post by JimC »

While bass are proving difficult to catch consistently it is important to "get the bend in the rod" :

We are not doing too bad when the weather is good! I haven't been needing mackerel for bait very often but fellows are describing them as "very patchy".

Ehem...apologies to the non-smokers :D It is not easy being the actor, director, camera man, editor, censor, continuity guy etc. I'll put a parent advisory :D :D

It was strange on the day. There was a massive rise in temp very quickly as fog/haze burned off. I actually got a spot on the lens that took a while to clear.

That's class. Would you reckon a shimano vengeance 240 , 20-60g and a catana 4000 reel be up to this type of fishing. I've never used them from a boat before :?:

I'd say no bother Dave. Decent .11 or .13 braid would help no end

Great going jim, it's good to get the info how to work the lure and the tackle needed. I'm going out tomorrow and I'm going to give this a go, never fished like that off the boat before so fingers crossed, would sidewinder lures be any use, I got the rhubarb and custard colour , ?.

Problem with the sidewinder is the weight of the lure Dan or lack of weight! They are more suited to a flying collar rig.You will not get down easy or you will not be able to feel the bottom. I use anything up to 70g in deeper water ( usually 20 to 40 depending on location, depth and drift speed)This is a style of fishing that is great craic but if the drift is too brisk you will find it difficult. This works well with speed jigs as well.
Have a cut off it...that first decent pollack will bring a smile!

Brilliant video Jim. Going to try those tactics when wind dies down. You make it look real easy :!: :!:

It can be too Stan. You should have some good reefs off youghal.
If all else fails you have some nice reefs off Ballycotton Island.
That said I think i'd stay with the bass a while as you are doing superbly

Thanks Jim. AS long as the bass are cooperating I will stay with them. They have been scarce this year but with the southerly winds I think that they will return. We have had so much N & NW winds it has had a dreadful effect on them. Throw in millions of gallons of fresh water and you can't blame them for moving offshore. Felt like doing the same myself but couldn't miss the chance to fish :!:
