Hi

Just looking for feedback on what people think of the new format - new editor in place and he's only down the road so I could suggest options or new directions to him if anyone has any ideas...

Brilliant Kieran, Mr Dinsmore will do brilliant things for this magazine, I can tell!

You're new format for your Marks piece is well layed out and goes into much more detail than before, it'll take you a while getting through them all But at least we'll have a comprehensive guide on Paper to some of the best marks in the Country...

Also the 'Why I Fish' article on the back page is one to look out for :wink: :wink:

It's funny but since I got interested in SWFF, Irish angler (I have most of the back issues) got a lot more interesting. And I used to one of those saying that there wasn't enough sea stuff in there. With hindsight, I think it was reasonably well-rounded now.....

Yeh, I like the way your given so much extra info on the mark reviewed and with good photos showing where to go. :D

If I could make one suggestion it would be that each month you give a mark from a different province/county.

I know alot of the better marks are along the west/south/north coast but there are probably just as many anglers on the east coast. :wink:

Also if in the future you are thinking of doing somewhere like Wicklow, Greystones,Bray etc.. I know it's a fair bit away from you so I would be happy pop out and take any photos of marks in or around that area of the world.

if possible , more contributors on the sea angling side, to be fair its mostly only terry jackson on the shore and boat articles, good angler but there are other places and people out their who could do a few as well surely? i like your wee bit kieran, possibly 1 mark from each provice for shore and boat each month? whether it be slipways etc?

im now buying almost every issue of it where i only used to buy the odd one.

free gifts would help! they seem to have dissappearred from sea angling magazines quite a bit over the last 10 years

Definitely agree with bigPhil on more shore stuff. The only access I have to fishing is from the shore and the tackle from each type of fishing can be used alot in the sea.
Though I know there is probably a higher demand for game, I only remember 2 or 3 articles recently on shore fishing.
I subscribe to it by the way.

Being the good Samaritan I am I will step forward and volunteer (with pay) to be the shore angling correspondent just give me a jeep load of free tackle and a handsome salary and I'm off. Good mag its nice to pick up a fishing mag and recognize some of the marks.

well in recent months there have been one or two articles on shore fishing done from up here by daryll aston and terry jackson, for flounder and bass, both done from venues not very far apart but still one is ann estuary flounder mark in lough foyle ,the other a surf beach (benone/downhill)perhaps an improvement would be say an article done from the rocks and an article from the beach and a couple from the boats each month?- from different places around ireland at that?
noticed even total sea fishing mag are nicking articles from it via dhpublishing??? :roll: :wink: :lol: at least it is giving jim, rob and co even more well deserved publicity on their excellent coalie catches!

It's the first Angling magazine i have read in a long time, well, i've only read the sea articles and the one on the Drowes. Only thing missing from the Drowes article was maybe some statistics, numbers of fish caught through the years. Again with the Tuna trip article, it didn't teach me an awful lot on the actual fish itself, still a good article though in the end.

Hi

One very important correction required to the piece on Keem Bay in Achill.

If you expect to catch triggerfish "three at a time" you'll be disappointed. That piece refers to the coalfish or ribble caught especially in the autumn but still present in numbers as late as May. Triggerfish are possible in July to September (weather dependent) and are caught one at a time if you are lucky.

Lesson learned. Thanks for all the feedback and yes, we will be moving around between all the provinces. I love the bit about being paid a truckload of tackle and a load of money - ha :D - I'm still laughing!

We'll ensure that the sub-editor does not have the problem again...

I would say Irish Angler is an excellent magazine with a reasonably good balance of articles. It has reasonably good balance of articles, news, test reports and advertisements. The format, presentation photography are all excellent.

Like other forum members (as you probably guess from the forum name) I fish in more than one environment, so the magazine is my number one choice. I certainly can't complain about the number and quality of articles on pike fishing!

However, I agree with other forum members that the magazine could have more articles on shore angling: that would make it a really balanced publication and maybe the popularity of this type of fishing is somewhat under-represented in the magazine.

At first, I thought the introduction of the section on 'Fish Doctors' appeared a bit gimmicky. However, after getting used to the style of the presentation, the section is very informative.

I particularly like the recent addition of Kieran Hanrahan's 'Around Ireland' series. I have heard a lot about Achill as a good fishing venue but seeing the marks in quality photographs with good, knowledgeable advice really is a bonus. Well done Kieran. Is the series venturing North to Counties Antrim and Down in the future? I would say that this series could go on for many years and be of great interest to anglers (local and international).

The only minus point for me about Irish Angler is having missed the first few months of the publication :cry:

perhaps the magazine could be made bigger each month also, so as for anglers like myself who only fishes the sea, you would be getting enough articles in it to justify the price you pay for it?? - as an example with totalseafishing(made by the same publisher) you pay 15p less for it and get at least 10 extra pages on average and its all sea fishing.
surely if the sea fishing side of the mag was increased it would attract a lot more sea anglers to buy it, and therefore boost its appeal even more and keep it as the best selling fishing mag in ireland??
just as a matter of interest, roughly how many sea angling contributers does the irish angler have?

The best way to improve this magazines circulation is, as I mentioned somewhere before, to have it distributed by Newspread as well as Easons. Other outlets aside, there are over 150 stores from the same franchise as myself who have an agreement whereby Newspread is our main supplier of magazines and they dont carry the title. Its a shame, as I find it an interesting and enjoyable read, coarse stuff aside. Being able to pick up a mag and read about marks you actually have some possibility of fishing is superb. Your new marks section is excellent, much better than a brief paragraph on various spots as before, well done!
