PB Bass for me - Somewhere in Cork Aug 2
People:Me and 2 friends and one junior (12yrs old under training)
Duration:2.5h
Tide: High to low
Weather: Perfect - cloudy, windy with good surf...
Bait: Hokkaido Shallow by Alcedo and frozen lug
Rigs: lures, float
Results: Bass
Report:
Were out camping and of course we have to bring and include in our bags our fishing gears. We have learned to set our expectations lower since we have had loads of not so good sessions in the past. Everytime we try to target Bass we end up getting pollock on the rocks and flatties on the beach. So this time we didn't have anything in mind just use different rigs, baits and try out different lures. If we get anything out of it while teaching the young one then it will be great experience. On my end I wanted make this an easy day of fishing and just have fun. So, in order to make it more challenging since we expect to blank out, I used my lightest rod and used one of my kids spinning play reels (Okuma Zorax) and a lure that I am not sure will work (Hokkaido Alcedo) bought from a local market stall on the weekend milk market in Limerick for 7 yoyos. In turn just in case things turn on my favour I loaded it with 30lb braid. Off we went in a mark that some people here would be familiar when they see the background. We started setting up and casting. But since the intention is to encourage the young lad and teach him how to cast and retrieve using lures, we were not really paying that much attention to what we do with our light gears. Most of the time I would cast and retrieve while I am not looking at my own lures just making sure we get to watch the junior do his cast and make it improve. 30 minutes into the play, a huge wave walloped my lure and I thought I got snagged or caught a huge weed since it became too heavy and when I tried to retrieve it, my reel started going out instead of getting in the spool... a little wiggle in the rod and the reel was already screaching out. Hahaha... this is where the fun starts reeling in a a big fish from a far while holding the spool itself cause it cannot handle the retreat of the fish... line would just squeak and out it goes... it was a tough one to reel in as my rod was totally bent and my reel screaming no no no... I can't take this type of beating... eventually, after in and out, in and out... the fish managed to takes his mouth of the hook but luckily the belly got caught on the lower hook... It was one hell of a fight that the young lad witnessed... It was all great fun with the group... my heart was beating so fast cause the fish almost became one of our stories of the one that got away! unfortunately, this one had to be taken in to our camp unlike the others that we have released to be caught another day... we need to make the misus happy, instead of just bringing in nice stories of fish that they can only see in pictures...
I didn't manage to check its size and weight but all I can say is that the head is way bigger than my blackberry phone.
We were all happy campers and the young one is now asking for the next sessions...

That's an interesting red spot on the dorsal fin - anyone any suggestions as to what it is?
Well done by the way!
