Courtown sun bathing 17/7/12

#1 Post by JPA »

People: Me and Madame

Duration: 11 h 00 - 14 h 00

Tide: didn't move

Weather: summer at last !

Bait: ragworms and frozen crab

Rigs: 2 hooks flapper (size 2) and pulley (size 3/0)

Results: 2 flounders, 3 smooth hounds (including 2 pups)

Report: Last minute fishing session. The weather forecast was great, so my wife proposed to come with me to see how I go fishing... I couldn't possibly deny such a proposition ! We took a day off with a very short notice and we left our little one at the creche (what bad parents we are... he would have been bored anyway). I followed Alan's advice (he is never wrong about fishing) and headed down to Courtown. I got rags and directions from the local tackle shop. No anglers on the beach. This wasn't a good sign. At least, we could choose the spot, before the holidaymakers arrived. My wife quickly caught her first fish. She was delighted. Everything was fine and then a very pleasant surprise happened : a nice bend in the rod and resistance when I reeled in. At last something was fighting at the other end of the line. What a change compared to the small fishes or the dead weight dogfishes I used to reel in ! A fin emerged from the water. Then a full sized smooth hound was on the beach, ready for a picture with a proud angler and back in the water to fight another day. I knew they were there, but I wasn't sure if they could be taken in the daylight. I think I got other fishes, but didn't remember, as I was over the moon. We finally left the beach to the swimmers and went home sunburned but happy.

the water was murky too. It looked clearer at distance and I think the smoothie was just at the edge of the murky zone.

A seriously addictive feeling ! It wasn't a monster compared to the other posts on the forum... I could only imagine the thrill of hooking one of those bigger beautiful fishes.
