long rod for the boat

Being back on the competition scene for the last few years now and notice more and more guys using
long fixed spool rods tubertini and the like.
They seem to use them for wrasse and polock when fishing in the rough ground.
I wouldn't mind trying the long rod but don't want to spend a fortune and not get into it
Any suggestions on long rods to give this type of fishing a go
I have a penn surf blaster fixed spool reel that I'd say has enough grunt for the fish or should I try out a smaller reel

I think the lasds normally use 5000 sized reels just so there not holding a big lump of a reel for the day.

For rods the Grauvell range are very good. I have a few 285cm rods myself (Anaga and Azimuth) I think they guys normally use 3 Meter plus rods on the charter boats, so I'm not sure how Grauvell do with this type of rod, but they are an excellent budget rod and will give you a feel for that type of fishing, before you splash out on a Tubertini.

I have the Anaga 285, but can't find any green tips for it, so I picked up an Azimuth 285 off Dan in Half way angling in Cork last year. Another cracking rod for the money. I have used fixed spools on both of them without any hassles, but the longer rods are better for the underarm cast.

You could give a carp, pike or bass type rod a try, and you can pick them up realatively inexpensive too. As for the reel it might be a little too big to balance with one of those type rods, but you could try first and see.

A carp rod could be done, but bite detection for smaller fish at anchor would not be good.

Quiver tip boat match rods are specifically designed to be able to deal with underarm casting from boats with heavy weights combining steely mid sections and fibre glass tips. Bass, Pike and carp rods are all through action for the most part and will do you few favours when it comes to this style of angling. There are a great many decent quivertips on the market for smallish money. Keep an eye out for the now (sadly) discontinued Abu Premium multi tip as a decent rod to start with. Lose the multiplier, your Anaga teamed with the light tip and a FS will give you a good idea but wont allow you to cast as far. If you havent got a light tip for the anaga, ie just the red one, spare glass fibre tips can be bought and if they dont fit, just get ready to do a bit of sanding. Your Penn Surfblaster is not possibly the best reel for the job but is more than adequate while you are getting to grips with a different style.

Personally I wouldnt fancy the carp rod unless the boat was very big but I did try it a few years ago . No problem with bite detection or casting but I did find it a nuisance in general to manouvre being 11ft .
