Donegal 7/7/12

#1 Post by grady »

People:me and my mate

Duration:5am-1pm

Tide:high @ 9.06am

Weather:cloudy, periods of rain, eastish wind

Bait:mack, lug

Rigs:float, plastik lures

Results:pollack, wrasse

Report:
It been a while of last report even I'v made a few sessions. The thing is that was nothing really to report about, exept doggies couple of rays and small pollack. I couldn't understand what is happens, until I'v read a discussion about all this bloom in northwest waters. Thanks to all for this information
On the way to my mark I stopet at the usual lug digging grounds and spot very same situation that boys discussed about. All area was covered by this green algae, lugs were on the surfase, so all I had to do is just collect them, I was wondered what's going on, becouse I haven't see this before, well I spot this algae couple of weeks ago, but not that behavior of worms. Another thing is that i also found two dead flounders very close to the shore line and the first thought was that they just didn't manage with outgoing tide, but now could be all this bloom involved.
Perhaps i should make a few sessions to the east coast until all this mess clears up
Anyway back to my report. So, for this session I'v picked a pretty new mark, well ai'v been there before, but never had a chance to fish it. We arrived to the mark at 5am and it was only couple of hours after low tide, so it was no hurry. First of all made a float rig baited with big piese of mackerel and cast it far out expecting early pollack or late conger, but neither of them appeared. As tide kept coming my clock was also ticking, I thought is the time to try few different lures and you believe or not nothing showed up atall.
In my opinion this mark was ment to be perfect habitat for pollack, wrasse, colies, and other predatory fish, the water is deep enough and very broked and kelpy sea bed, but nothing happens. Well different tides and weather works prety different between areas, but I fished almost two tides and still no joy.
only one thing was left to do was a light floating tackle baited with lug, and fortunatly I saved my blank with 2lb pollack and few small wrasses and another spesiment that I could't recognise.
So i still not fully sure what was wrong wether all this bloom or just east winds and big amount of rain or simply ME.
But I will comback to this spot, becouse I think there loads to do when weather is right and all this bloom will dissapears, but at the moment I thinking to head towards dublin, wicklow for couple of sessions

Thanks,
Grady

Hi Grady - good report there and sorry to hear about the lack of fish. I do not know where you were at in Donegal as I would consider it my back garden . However re the green algae I wonder if it is the same crap that took over Courtmacsherry Bay and to a lesser extent Inchydoney Beach nr Clonakility ( both in Co Cork ) for a few years ie until recently . Nothing would move it ie tides nor bad weather and the locals there were at a loss as to what caused it though nitrates from fertilisers were the main suspect but never proved . My two local fresh water lakes in Tyrone ie Moor Lough and Lough Ash were closed for a few weeks last month due to a similiar "Bloom" again the fisheries squad had no answers for it . Hopefully it will clear up where ever you were in Donegal...
ps if any readers have any info or links as to what causes this, I,d love to hear them .. Tight lines Grady from John in Yemen and hopefully will be home next Wed

Hi John, thanks for replay, I was in west donegal, I hope that it clears soon and without major harm to the fish, actually markings of the marine institute showing that this area where I was in particular, is least efected, but I spot some sight of that, judging by clearness of the water, I could barely see 2 foot below the surfase, but for now we are temporary forced to look for some fishing elswhere
