mayo beach 27-06-2012

#1 Post by saving private brian »

People:me and dec

Duration:22.30pm-02.00am

Tide:hw@00.30am

Weather:mild night,,slight wind,,very black clouds around with the first quater of the moon showing the odd time,,nice surf but later on into the night thunder and lightning storms at distance,,wind was all over the place

Bait:lug,macks,sandeels,

Rigs:flappy flappers

Results:flounders,small turbots,,tons of lsd`s and a 4+1/2lb trout for dec

Report:havent been out for 2 weeks now so was going to go no matter what,,texted dec and got a response to say he was all good for the session..i went to dig and few lug and set off about 20.00pm to hook up with dec,,we went to a mark that really fishes best 2hours either side of low water but we agreed that we would try it the same but up on the high water side...got to our mark to find a nice surf, where as the rest of the marks around the coast were pretty flat,,when we got there the wind had swong from the southwest to the north but was stilll very warm,,we both banged out 2 rods and settled down to an evenings fishing,,i had brought 2 cans of larger so we cracked them open, sat down and lit up a fag, while chatting and listening to the roar of the surf,,,dec sat to the left of my so while facing to his right chatting to me he noticed a massive trout jumping 3 foot out of the air, down around the browny water that was coming out of the stream from the land,,it was so brown that we both kept to the left of it a bit,,,anyway we both kept looking for the next jump till the next thing dec`s rod took a nice knock, which looked like a small trout till it then it lifted it out of the tripod,,,he was reeling in and he wasnt sure if it was a trout,so i ran to the waters edge to help in the retrieve,,got him to the beach and he had landed a massive trout,,he was very long and skinny, but still weighed in at 4+/2lb,,if he had filled out abit theres no doubt he could of been up on 6 and over,,,quick pic and away with the fish to jump another day,,,as high water approached the dogs came on heavy as we also picked up small turbots and small founders,,weed came a problem at highwater too but died away abit on the ebb,,we still picked up dogs on the ebb and on the last cast i took in a flounder maybe around the 32cm or little more,,,,we seen heavy lighting storms at distance to the south along with heavy rain lumps so we packed up with the wind gone that way, blowing them up towards us,,,,hope a bit of surf builds up on the other beaches for the weekend but might do that as the wind i think is goin northwest on saturday i think,,,,,,roll on the weekend

cheers

I’m still catching them down here as well, there is still plenty about. I have also discovered that Pollock are brilliant fighters and I am having great fun with them on light tackle. I am tying large double and single hook buck tail lures and they seem to be deadly, the Pollock love them. The more I find out about sea fishing the better it is becoming. But still have a long way to go in the learning process.
