Waterford Bass hunt, 26th June 2012 - has my luck changed?

#1 Post by John D »

People:Me, Anthony & Barry (joined briefly by Paul & Joe later).

Duration:05:00 - 15:00

Tide:High at approximately 10:00

Weather:It started off dull, mild, overcast, foggy and lashing rain with medium sized waves and decent water clarity. Later the southerly winds picked up speed, the waves grew and the water started to cloud a bit. The sun then tried to squeeze through and the rain dried up.

Bait:N/A

Rigs:Slimcodes, water monitors, senkos, feed shallows, ghost wanders and a few others.

Results:1 bass.

Report:

Well my luck didn't change but I did witness a very big bass being caught and landed by Anthony. I must admit I was very jealous. However, I've not witnessed a bigger bass being caught and landed before so it was quite a privilege. The fish was taken at 05:30 on a pale/dark water monitor fished from a shingle shore into a deep corner between two weed beds. It was the only fish of the day. Other than that we didn't have one take or follow. In fact we didn't even see another fish :(
The fish was returned and swam away a little slowly but seemed in very good condition.
Anthony asked me what weight I thought it was and I guessed at least 10lbs.
We've since been given other estimates - guesses anyone?

The reports today are killing me....... :-)

No bass in the office, not a tap..!! :-)

Just thinking, a fish that size probably comes in to feed every few weeks and just hoovers up a few pollock and then back out to a reef etc...cant imagine it chases baitfish that often. (God I need to get out....)

I would say that it can be over 12lb. Great fish! Did you guys measured the fish?

Dont mean to rain on anyones parade but to me that doesn't look like a 10lb fish. The photo isnt great to have a good guess as he has his arms outstretched towards the camera, his fingers look very big which shows this. Having caught a fish just scratching over 10lbs recently, it was 81 cm I think, before I weighed it I tought it was going to be about 13-14lb, but I was wrong, but in comparrison to that one it looks like it was bigger. Still I could be wrong! Pity it wasn't measured. But a cracker anyway, not many get em that size.
Species 2012:

Cod, Whiting, flounder, coalfish, bass, pollack, sea trout, poor cod, pouting, dogfish, sea scorpion, 3 bearded rockling, blonde ray, painted ray, turbot.

No way of knowing unless it was measured. A 80cm fish can weigh around 10lb at this time of year; a fish of the same length caught in Oct could weigh around 12lbs. Mighty catch from the shore, though, and on a lure too! Well done!!!
