Cleaning sea water corrosion of rod guides

Any tips on cleaning sea water corrosion off rod guides?

I use a Shimano spinning rod for pollack and wrasse off rocks and although I rinse the rod with fresh water on returning home, there is green corrosion on the rings (rings not pitted, just discoloured -green).

Tips on removing and preventing corrosion would be welcome.

After rinsing/wiping in fresh water and leaving to dry, i give the guides a quick squirt of WD40. Leave for 5 or 10mins then wipe off the excess with kitchen towel or rag. Same applies to reels. Will keep them in good nick for years if you do this after every session. Use of WD40 should also help to clean the existing corrosion off your guides.

i think when reading boatfishing monthly a few issues back, there was something advertised to clean all corrosion etc from rings and boat fittings etc, salt x or something like that??

yes same stuff was advertised in sea angler if you take a look you will find it .

Has anyone on the forum tried Salt X?

Was thinking it would be good for cleaning rods and reels ( although I imagine the reels would need a complete strip and rebuild after )?

good wipe down and a little spray of WD40,seems to do the trick

The wipe down and WD40 appears to work well.

I had a look at the Salt X preparation. It looks good but I couldn't justify the outlay.

I saw this tip from Mike Thrussel for cleaning saltwater corrosion on the Sea Fishing UK web site.

TIPS AND TRICKS
One of my regular fishing mates has found a really novel way to clean the salt corrosion that builds up on the chrome frame of his beach multipliers.

Remember as kids we were shown in basic science at school that if you dropped an old and dirty copper penny in to Coke or Pepsi and left it overnight, by the morning the penny was shiny bright again? It's the same principle.

He pours enough Coke in to a container to fully immerse the stripped down cage, leaves it overnight, and tells me by the next morning the chrome is spic and span, shiny as new. A quick wash in warm soapy water to wash the acidity and sugar off left by the Coke and the job is done.

I haven't tried it yet, but I'll have a go next time I need to clean some corroded rod guides.

eso..I've not used SaltX but have been told its the dogs doodars for anything metal.

If the build up is green , could be the metal on the guides is brass, stainless would pit and go black, other metals would rust.

WD40 is good for most things as far as rust preventions goes, but it does break down the varnish and high-build around the guides, I wouldn't spray my rods and leave them overnight with WD40 on, warm soapy water is good for cleaning rods down and retaining a shine on the varnish.
