Mackeral Sandeel Squid.... Pennell Rigs with size 1/0 + wide Gap hooks. Make you you've got your rigs tide so the bait will be hard to the bottom while fishing.

From Belfast
up m2 until it ends ... head for Derry ... at Derry first roundabout turn right...keep following signposts for Buncranna... Once you cross the border, keep going for approx 10 miles ... youll see a marina to your left, beach is just after marina.

Approx hour and a half drive time

for all species on fahan including the rays all that is generally needed is a 3hook (2up 1down flapper with 60-80lb body, 30-40 lb snoods and size 1 - 1/0 kamasan b490 or mustad 3261bln hooks , basically any good strong aberdeen, there is never normaly any need to resort to a penell and big baits, it is normally overkill.
the rays will lift baits the normal size you would use for doggies , eg just about 1 and 1/2 to twice the length of the hook.
something like a mackerel strip or whole sandeel normally does the trick
luminous beads also have their day
take some heavier than normal gemini leads as sometimes it can be real hard to hold bottom when the tide starts running, sometimes a plain lead does ok to though.
reel - anything holding enough 15 - 20lb line is fine
rod - normally the heavier end of beachcasters are used, though rough ground pokers are generally not required(pookie your fladen will do fine)

pookie the pennell rig presents the bait better ,and the biggest one caught so far took a double squid, try mounting that on a size 1 or 1/0 hook.
