Hi iv just started fishing compations for my local club and it isn't going well a tall.. Iv had 3 blanks already this year out of six.. I'm usually tipping my lug with mackerel or razor.. And it's not working.. When I'm pleasure fishing I'm just using a plane lug on one rod and a big bait on a other and I'm catching fish every time.. Should I go back to the way I normally fish or keep trying to do what the good lads are doing?

Do what you know best. But if your fishing marks for the comps that you dont normally fish then a bit of research on whats catching there will help to.Noelo5 wrote:Hi iv just started fishing compations for my local club and it isn't going well a tall.. Re: Tipping baits
If I couldn't decide between a method that works for me and one that doesn't I'd go for ............ a pint . Sorry , no offence intended . I probably wouldn't believe every tip a match fisherman gave me just in case he was feeding me red herrings . Perhaps your method outfishes theirs and they are in a quandry about whether to change to yours ?
Good luck

Re: Tipping baits
Alright Noel you should ask the lads who win your club comps this question I have no doubt they will help you out. Where you fish and what your fishing for dictate what bait you use so do your homework and listen to advise given on the beach and you'll be grand and don't worry about the odd blank it happens.

Re: Tipping baits
Alright noel
hows things going i agree with keith about asking the lads and watching what there doing .
plus we have all had blanks on beaches we dont know to well thats were local info comes into it in helping you pick what bait u use or how far or near you fish some beaches are flounder dabs beaches witch only need you to cast between 10 to 30 yards for ur fish so bait choice cud be lug ,lug, with mack tip, rag ,rag tip mack ,or black warps with maddies .the last bait maddies play a big part when scratching in the surf. outher beaches for dog or hounds or huss may require you the clipped down and blast baits out witch cud be sandeel ,sandeel and rag, mack, squid, plus some outher cocktails...but this info can only come with fishing the beaches over time and chatting to to local lads and watching what they do in the comps if ur not to sure what to do watch the laads either side of you on there first cast if they go out and get a fish copy and if they go in the gutter do the same and they you can go from there.hope it helps.

Tipping baits
thanks for the info lads...I was doing like you said villa looking at the other lads and copying what there doing but I was getting mad when I wasnt catching any.. I'm thinking maybe my bait presentation isn't right maybe. Cause I'm tipping lug with mack, but when I fish on me own I use plane lug and it works better...

Re: Tipping baits
Just wondering what size hook ur using and size baits......for scrathin in close what works for me is three hook fappers long snoods and size4r6 hooks, ive even seen some people use size8, bout two inches of lug tipped with a fingernail size bit of mack, same goes for rag, sandeel r what ever, if u have maddies just thread one on the hook and add acouple more on the tip for movement and wiggle........if u already know this then this message is useless lol......

Re: Tipping baits
Try tipping with squid or sardine. Sardine works well having a high oil content and smell
