Kinsale pollock spinning session!

#1 Post by tomgrey »

People:Me

Duration:3hrs

Tide:1 & 1/2 either side of high

Weather: some cloud, sunny spells

Bait: N/A

Rigs: silver spoon spinners

Results: 6 Pollock

Report: Decided to try a mark near the old head that I had never fished before. The misses was complaining about spending so much cash on substandard fillets from the fish monger (guess she has high standards with a man to bring her home the freshest of fish) so with pollock in mind I set off with the bare essentials for a spinning session. The walk down to the mark was ruff indeed, with high heather and bracken to get through. It was nothing compared to the way back which was many more times as difficult, I had to stop 3 times for a breather as it was very steep, but with the fishing as good as it was I think I would still brave it again.

The water was very clear and very deep just under me at the edge, probably at least 30 feet. I was on a finger of rock jutting out from the base of the cliffs and casting along its edge. First cast produced a nice fighting pollock around 3lbs. Secound cast along the same spot hit into another just about the same size. I started alternating my casts a bit after that. It took about another 20 mins before I was into another and again about the same size. After this things went quite for a half hour or so so I moved to the next finger of rock that I could see. Fished there for about another half hour but nothing.

Was nearly going to pack up for home but I said i'll give the other spot another try. Sure enough 2nd cast was into another 3lb'er, with two more a short while later, again around the same size. Kept 3 fish for herself as I will be back to that spot again later this summer to see if some bigger ones show up. A neighbour of mine goes diving around that area and told me that last summer he saw many pollock nearly into double figures just meters from the shore. So I will defo be back. It was great sport on the little 7ft rod and light tackle. The misses was pleased too

What lures do you use for pollock? I've never fished for them. You need to find a rocky spot with deep water is it?

Cheers Alan, yeah good to get out for a spinning session must do a bit more during these summer months. Sure beats draging all the beach gear around.

Cheers Fergle, yeah well It wouldn't be a mark to fish with a good swell coming in.

Hi Tony, well i'd say you can get them almost anywhere except maybe over a surf beach. Doesn't really have to be very deep water. With regards to lures I think pollock with take almost anything from feathers to big lures. I was using silver bar/spoon spinners but soft plastics are great for them too.
