Lugs - what am I doing wrong?

I tried to dig some lugworms yesterday on the south strand and result was disappointing. I only had small garden digger and dug around "spaghetti" marks, about 20 cm deep. I got some alright but very small, 5cm, only few bigger.
Do I need proper size garden fork/shovel to dig deeper and faster or was I just unlucky?
Also - there was plenty of small crabs there - around 3cm - are they any use as a fishing bait? Is it legal to collect them at all?

When we dig we go past the millions of small swirls and head further out.

Then I look for a swirl and a hole thats alone, I know then that theres a lug there. The further out you go on low tide the bigger they get but also the deeper sometimes...

Use a garden fork and dig 1 swirl at a time if you only want big ones.... We get them up to a foot long and as thick as your thumb!

hi mate i dont know were your digging but if you in dublin then sandymount strand is great for lug and you dont have to go out very far park up at the start of the coast road at the e.s.b and walk out to the first stream it only 200 yard from the car and you should get enough worms to do a session and a good size to in a half hour dig and get yourself a good garden fork the worms should be about 2 fork heads down but if digging the nth side of the city then out by the wodden bridge in clontarf has some good lug and rag too

I dig in north Dublin fat lugs just at the bottom of some steps not out fare right in close just dig deeper try poolbeg
