Culloo , Valencia Island

#1 Post by BRAD »

Hi,
I am going to Kerry in a couple of weeks and would like to fish Culloo rocks on Valencia island but do not know the directions etc . I tried to find it a couple of years ago and parked up by the lighthouse and headed to the right ( as there was a strong SW blowing) but do not know if this was the right area. If someone could help it would be much appreicated.

Hi Brad,
The best way to get to Culloo Rock is to take the bridge onto Valentia Island at Portmagee. When you arrive on the island turn left and continue driving. The first left turn on this road will take you to the car park for Bray Head. You will need to take the left turn after this (aprox 1/4 mile). It is a small single track road that goes between several houses. Follow this road for almost a mile and park on the road by the last derelict house. From there climb over the wall on the right and follow the track which will eventually bring you to Culloo Rock.
First of all, a word of warning. Culloo is probably the most dangerous shore mark in Ireland. If there is even a moderate swell you need to keep well away from there.
Secondly, it can get very crowded and the standard of behavour there can be very poor. It is regularly covered in rubbish. I was once a regular visitor there as I don't live far away but I no longer go there.
Maybe if you tried it early in the morning it would be OK. I would avoid weekends at all costs during the summer.
On a positive note it was the most concistent producer of mackerel in Ireland and I have hooked really big fish on bait that were almost imposible to land. It holds cod, pollock, wrasse, conger and even ling.
But please be carefull!!

Hi Brad,

I could not agree with john q on this mark it can be treacherous, BE Careful, there used to be a rail people used to tie on to not im not sure if its still there.

What type of stuff were you planning on targeting ? Could recommend a few other marks if you like...........

Hi Barney,
Thanks for the response , would really like to catch a Ling as have never caught one before , a good sized Bull Huss would be nice too , as we only seem to catch them up to about 6lb in the Dingle area where we will be staying !!!. My friend and I like to catch a wide range of species that we dont get here at home like the Three bearded rockling etc.
