Rigs:me- 2 hook flappers, mate- dont know

Results:Me- 2 sea trout, mate-2 sea trout




Report:I had meant to put this up sooner as it was a couple of weeks ago but I was waiting on some pics from my friend. So here it goes...

After a few pints and a pool shootout the night before, with sore heads it was decided to give the lug digging session a miss and to pop into dougie in the takleshop on the quays in Westport. So we picked up some sandeel and some frozen lug and hit the road up to north Mayo which was a bit of a drive away.

We got to the beach which was totally empty. The sand was smooth and untouched with different colour tones waving down the sand dunes and down the beach, it was stunning. We set up just at the mouth of where an estuary channel flowed into the beach. I set up two rods and my friend set up one. After about an hour my friend was doing his customary victory song and dance as he beached a nice little sea trout around 1lb and a half on sandeel. I was now at least hopeful of catching one. About another 3/4 of an hour went by and I still hadn't got so much as a tap on both rods.

It was about this time when again I hear the cheering of what could only be another fish on for Niall. This was another sea trout just a bit bigger than the first, again caught on sandeel. This was also accompanied with, hey this is what a sea trout looks like, have a look, and similar slaggings. Grrrrrh , I was getting worried that I would be leaving Mayo without a fish. A couple of minutes went by and I decided to use sandeel on all hooks and bag the black lug which I was using on the bottom flapper on both rods. A few minutes went by and I got my first bite , a good rattle, but I didn't hook up.

After rebaiting and casting out again I got another good bite, but this time I felt something on and it was indeed a nice wee sea trout around the pound and 1/2 mark . I had a smile from ear to ear. Shortly after I had another of the same size just as we were packing up our gear. It was a nice little session in daylight hours which I dont get to do much of and it was a really beautiful beach. A week later my mate went back to the same spot and caught a 4lb sea trout. I will certainly visit again hopefully in the autum.

Lovely fishing and cracking photo of a wind swept beach as well.Tom just wondering with regards to a licence ,is there a general licence[all-ireland salmon sea-trout]or did ye need a specific district one.Its just herself is looking for a trip to the west and i might sneak a session in,if im lucky and don't want to get caught out should i meet any fishery people.

Thanks lad, it was good to level the score in the end because the fecker would have dragged that one out for a while, he gets great mileage out of topping me in a session although that doesn't happen very often Was great to get my first sea trout and I hope to get a few more this year and hopefully on home turf.

Yeah cracking looking fish, the one in the pic is the 2nd one I caught which looked a bit eaten by lice, poor little guy, the first one was immaculate, lovely hues of blue and green, but I didn't get a pic because it was lashing at the time so he just went straight back in. Altough on the small size I am happy to be able to add that species to the list, and am aiming to get one over 3lb this year : )

Thanks beachbuddy, it was a lovely beach to be on with lots of rugged beauty. Yeah you can get an "all districts" or "district" state licence one for a day, 3 weeks or an annual one. Dont how much the others are but the annual all Ireland one is 100 euros. Depending on where you fish you still might have to pay for a permit (different than the state licence) but these usuall apply to rivers, lakes etc. where you would have to seek info from that districts fisheries. As far as I know there is no permit for anywhere at sea but it is illegal to kill a sea trout at sea from clare to clew bay. Check here for more info on regulations etc, there is also a link on that page to get your licence online which is how I got mine, very easy to do and they post it out to you.

I'd say you know every land mark around that area brian like the back of your hand. Fine beach alright, your lucky for that to be your local. Some of the beaches in cork are not the cleanest which I hate to see but seeing some up north so immaculate is refreshing.

ya you can see why mayo gets the most blue flag beaches .you set up in a fine area too.after dark and half way coming tide there can be very productive

Yeah, my other mate from westport does a lot of surfing and he was on that beach a few times, he saw a few people fishing on it so we got the info that way. My friend is not the best in sussing out local marks and we have blanked a few times when I have gone fishing with him in Mayo. The lazy git just won't put in the ground work and find out what fishes best for what species, when and where etc, well I guess he just doesn't have the time. Glad that day turned out ok though. He doesn't have that problem when he comes to Cork I tell ya. I can put him over most species, altough I am still having trouble finding turbot and ray.

im very surprised you didnt get turbot there that day as that beach holds them.down in cork i dont know where youd get turbot,i suppose ud get the odd one maybe on the east cork beaches.you need to find a beach below that has that same type sand as the one in mayo had.you know that goldy type sand.for some reason its a turbots favourite but you will get them on normal sandy beaches too

Glad to help mate, hope you have a good session when you get out. I know what you mean, usually my rods end up taking up half of the passenger seat so the missus is always cursing them, until I bring her home some fresh fillets that is

Cheers for that brian, got some info PM'd to me on getting these locally so I am going to have a try very soon : )
