Westport area

#1 Post by Don »

Myself and Ian Bonney:

1pm -3pm:

Dropping tide

Glorius Sunshine but cold northerly breeze

Black wraps and Sandeel

Two hook Flappers

2 Sea trout and 1 Turbot

Dougie in "a shore thing" in Westport put us onto a nice beach mark. First couple of casts produced nothing so we removed the wraps and went entirely with Sandeel. Straight away Ian, (who hasn't fished in 15 years or so) caught a nice 2lb Sea Trout. In his next cast he had a small Turbot and in the next cast a lovely 4 lb Sea Trout that performed like a salmon jumping up a waterfall and tail walked and fluttered across the surface in a massive attempt to escape. A great scrap and a great comeback to fishing for Ian who has joined SAI SAC this year. I managed to blank. Later in the day I went to Old Head to see if I could tempt a ray and spun for Pollack as I was waiting. I spent two hours there and just a managed a dog fish.

We did encounter two sharks on our trip, but they were pool players in McCarthys bar both of whom were also beachcasters and who had given me the same recommended mark as Dougie.

Will be back to this venue again in August.

Thats a nice sea trout, one of the best fighting fish for their size from the sea imo, well maybe mullet have more power but they do put up a spirited fight indeed. Was staying in a friends recently in Westport, he lives on the quays there, popped into dougie when we where there for some sandeels, sound lad alright. If anyone on a trip to Westport I recommend popping in to him he is always willing to chat, not like some of the old school tackle shops around.
Species 2012:

Cod, Whiting, flounder, coalfish, bass, pollack, sea trout, poor cod, pouting, dogfish, sea scorpion, 3 bearded rockling, blonde ray, painted ray, turbot.
