hello lads, what would ye recon is the best way to mount whole squid for drifting? would a tube boom and a flowing trace do the job or is there better ways? thanks conor

small bait = big and small fish; big bait = only big fish. Go small.

It will depend whether you are drifting over rough or clean ground. A leger rig will not last too long in rough ground so a paternoster will lessen tackle losses. I would fish the leger where I could though. Be brave! Cod have a bucket of a mouth so go for a decent sized hook as it will help presentation as well. It would be no harm to whip the top of the bait with elastic to help it stay on better and stop it sliding down the shank of the hook.

Im with Jimc on this one ,ledger would be best, i would use a short length of about 36 inches of 60lb line from my hook to a swivel then a zip slider with a ball weight on and bounce it along the bottom it will keep you tight to the bottom and if your over sand the ball weight will puff the sand up nicely..............
I use heavy line simply because it is stiffer than a lighter one wont be flappin all over the place if you have a big run of tide.

Definately use elastic to hold your bait too...........

I'm more incline to use a pennell set up for the snood to keep the bait to hold its shape.
More often I catch the fish on the top hook

Had better results for decent cod with a fillet/flapper of fresh mackerel rather than squid most of the time. Thats what they'll be feding on over summer months. If its clean ground go for the running boom, medium ground you can rotten bottom the boom and over heavy ground stick to the ledger. Nice way to fish and good chance of picking up some other species too

Rightio then so.

Clean, sandy ground to drag a bait. Adjust length of line between boom/zip slider according to strength of tide - shorter (1m) when tide is pushing hard, longer (2m-3m) when it's slacker - to ensure bait is nailed to the floor and not flapping about up in the water. Pennel rig 3 or 4 squids, making sure the hook points aren't masked.

And just for the craic, a french boom standing off the mainline about 4 or 5 feet above the boom/zip, with an orange Eddystone or jellyworm swimming along on a snoodlength 1 foot shorter than the bait snood.

cheers for the replies lads! im happy enough to catch less but bigger fish was going to use the pennel set up alright, the ground is really mixed, sand, rock weed the lot, ive caught a 7lb and a week later a 10.5lb cod in the same spot on rubber eel and second one on a shad. biggest cod ive caught befofe were 1lb max! next try will be with the squid see how goes
