Ballyhornan, Co. Down 13.04.12

#1 Post by lacustris »

People:Solo

Duration: 21.00 to 23.00

Tide:Last of the ebb

Weather:Cold and calm

Bait:Rag

Rigs:2 X 3 flapper 1/0

Results:2 flounder 19cm and 29cm

Report:Up in the home turf for a couple of days so decided to give Ballyhornan beach
a cast for the first time. The sea was flat calm and the end of the ebb did not look promising
but had a small flounder on the first cast and another an hour later, so I was pleasantly surprised.

The reports do not rate the beach but I think it is worth further investigation. Half a mile out there
are reasonable codling so there may be a few inshore over the winter.

Good to hear someone else fishing this beach! Over the winter I've had reasonable success with coalies, tiny codling and whiting up at the north end. Where abouts did you set up - if you dont mind me asking?

I fished the southern end but it is snaggy, so go north until you are in line with the gable end of the house that can be seen
from the beach. It is only a few minutes walk from the car park. There is a very bright spot light on a building over looking the northern end which would drive me crazy!!

Yeah I've only fished the north end. The chart shows the south end to be a little shallower and quite patchy ground too. And yeah that light is a pain but it did rescue me one night when my lamp ran out of fuel and my two headlights packed in - that was not a good night  The rocks up there look worth a chuck too. Have you tried there?
