W Waterford 6th - 10th April
People: Me , Mandy ( sister-in-law), Leon & Keelan ( nephews)
Duration: 6 hours Friday ,3 hours Sunday, 3 hours Tuesday.
Tide: Rising
Weather: Sunny. Very cold blustery NW winds
Bait: razors, lugs, crabs
Rigs: 2 up paternoster
Results: 2 bass
Sounds like poor fishing but collecting bait provided great entertainment for the boys.
We went out on the Friday at the start of the rising tide to a favourite beach of mine at low water. Conditions were not great as there was no surf but I was confident that we would not blank……well there is always a first time and so after 3 hours of not a tap we moved to Youghal where we had the same result. This was a first time also for the lads to blank and at 7 & 8 years old they found it hard to believe that we had lost the magic touch!!!!
The plan for Saturday was to collect razors for bait and head out fishing afterwards. However, we spent more time than expected spilling out salt on the keyholes in the sand and watching the razors come up. The boys we enthralled watching the razors coming up out of the sand and fighting to grab them and put them in the bucket. At the end of the session we were frozen. It’s amazing how you do not feel the cold when busy and then when you stop the shivers kick in. So we went back to the house with our fresh bait and ate it in white wine and garlic sauce……what an end to a days bait collecting.
We got serious in Sunday and headed out in the evening with fresh crabs and lug to another spot that is “ guaranteed” to produce a bass or two. First cast Mandy’s rod was yanked from the stand and after a great battle she pulled in a fantastic 8lb bass. She now declared herself to be a “professional” fisherman!!! The boys said that she was just lucky and did not really know what she was doing. It was going to be hard to follow that result up but I managed to get a schoolie of about 2lb. The lads then reckoned that this was a tiddler compared to their mum’s fish!!! It is great to have experts on the sideline.
Next day we set out razor fishing before teaming rain arrived. We got lots of razors and mussel also. No need to go hungry in W Waterford.
On Tuesday more entertainment was provided by Cortaz as he dug lugs and collected crabs with the help of the boys. This was nearly better than fishing!!!! We headed for Whiting bay but did not get a tap.
Not a great week for fishing but I will soon have my own supply of bait provided by my nephews!!!

Nice to see you Arthur, I haven't seen or heard from you in a while. It's good to see you're having a nice influence on the young up and coming anglers!
All the best,

That's a fine bass the sister in law got - especially for daylight fishing - you will have to bring her fishing more often!!
I was collecting razor too on Saturday - I was probably on the next sand bank to you (the one you need to wade out too) - freezer is well stocked now, between myself and Melissa we got 197 razors.
