Coalfish Comeback @ Donaghadee, 08/03/2012
People: Just me
Duration: 6.45pm - 8.45pm
Tide: Pushing
Weather: Not Bad
Bait: Just Mackeral
Rigs: 2up1downs on both rods
Results:
8 Coalies, 2 Whiting, 1 Pollack, 1 Pouting
Report:
Using up the bait from yesterday, and had a much better session, started off with rolling leads on bother traces but found the tide was moving them that bit too much, So I moved to a Pyramid and a Watch lead which seemed to hold the bait just right. First fish was a welcome one, 20 minutes into the session and the tip of the light flattie rod hammered round with the tell tale signs of a coalfish, love the account the little blighters put up on the light rods, couple of pics and back he went.
First fish on the bigger rod was slightly different, pulling the rod round in a Jag Jag Jag fashion, before leaving a little slack and doing the same again, Jag Jag Jag... lifted into it, it wasn't heavy by any means, but I could feed the fish was there, and soon my suspicians were confirmed as a deep bodied pouting broke surface, lovely job.
Next fish on the light rod gave me a total slack liner! Surely had to be a Coalfish? Hit into it and it didn't feel like one, A whiting was hoisted briskly over the harbour wall, got photos and the gear back in, only for a repeat performance 2 minutes later!
The rest of the Coalies were pretty standard fare, though one did make a bid for freedom, lifting the lead and charging a good 30ft out of the harbour before I relised how far he'd went, set the hook and had great fun getting the fish back in...
