lugworms...

now lads i don't know if im the only one having trouble with my fingers.they are itchy after handling the lugworms,has this happened to anybody?

Have heard of this a few times. Knew one chap and his skin would peel after a couple of days using lug. Initially I put it down to him not wanting to dig worms But seriously, it was like dermatitis or suchlike. Fingers red, slightly swollen and itchy and eventually cracking & peeling. Have no idea what is the cause.

I`ve never had it from lug but rag leave my fingers feeling like i`ve washed them with nettles!!

Do you ever notice an allergy to prawns or have you ever had surgery where your skin was prepped with Betadine and had an allergic reaction afterwards, swelling and tenderness of the area operated on?

Lugworms give off iodine when handled. Their blood is based on hemoglobin, so this could be an allergic reaction.

Try marigold gloves, tight fitting, they don't take to much sensitivity away from your fingers and are easy to take on and off between bait up or get yourself a box of surgical gloves. You won't even notice they are on your hands.

Or - get in touch with your feminine side - start moisturising your hands after a session - you'd be suprised what a difference that could make.

Stay away from creams they will leave a scent on the worms which will reduce bites. Fish have a deadly sense of smell thats why you shouldnt be using soap or creams hours before you fish. Use latex gloves, they may not be comfortable but will do the job.
