Waterfoot Co Antrim , Wed 22-2-12

#1 Post by nialk »

People:Me and Martin

Duration:7.00pm-12.30am

Tide:Filling/Full High

Weather:Calm sea , slight cold breeze

Bait:rag, mussels, sand eels, mackeral, pin whiting

Rigs:3 hook flappers, 2 hook flappers, sliding pennal ,boom pennal

3 x fixed reel rods
1 x multiplier rod

Results: 6 pin whiting
1 x pollock
2 x dog fish
numerous crabs

Report:We arrived at waterfoot to find the pier empty so we set up our rods and got the lines quickly into the water. Within a few minutes Martin was reeling in a small whiting which was quickly put onto a pennal rig to use as a big bait, and, very quickly after this he had landed another 2 whiting, of which he kept 1 to use again as a big bait and returned the 2nd one. In between him catching these I was pulling in a few decent sized crabs   Then I pulled in a small pollock and to be honest I have seen more meat in a fish finger   But decided to use it as a big bait and see what happened..........Nothing :( so decided im away for a cup of tea.
Was sitting and thought I saw my rod give a strong nod but thought nah its another crab so decided to finish my cuppa.
Got up and thought right reel this in and change the bait, started to reel in and found it got harder to reel , thought I was caught in weed but kept at it and suddenly a dog fish broke the surface, this was my first one and was really pleased to have actually caught something bigger than a sardine.
on landing it and getting it fairly straightened out it ,we measured it at roughly 23".

. Then released it.
I thought my second line had been out long enough without any movement so started to bring it in and thought this is very heavy, surely I cant be that lucky , and sure enough it was another dog fish, when we got landed it was slightly smaller at 20".
That was it for me the rest of the evening no more fish only a few more crabs. Martin on the other hand caught another 3 whiting and a few crabs .

Then was time to pack up and head home, happy that we had finally caught some fish after so many times drawing a blank.
