Illegal Bass!Again!!!

Heard a whisper that a business from East Cork was caught selling Irish bass in France.
Apparently the SFPA followed the lorry to market.No press release !!!!

While this would indeed be welcome I'm not sure the SPFA would 1 - travel, 2 - have jurisdiction. Surely the lorry would be stopped at the ferry.
I have not heard anything on the grapevine has anybody else?

In 21 years of bass protection legislation the SFPA did not manage to get a single prosecution for illegal bass fishing/landings in Ireland. I very much doubt that they would travel to France to achieve one now.
As already covered on this forum the IFI have done much better. Check the following---

Recently at Midleton District Court 2 fishermen were found guilty of using nets to catch Bass. IFI Fisheries Officers observed the nets on the evening of 11 July 2011 and in the early hours of the next day apprehended the two men.

In evidence the Fisheries Officers stated that following a report they observed a net fixed out just off the shore at Aghada Power Station which was subsequently hauled into an unlighted punt used by the two fishermen in conjunction with a sea fishing boat which was also unlit. The officers quietly approached the punt in a protection boat and using a powerful hand-held spot light suddenly confronted the fishermen. The pair reacted by heaving a fish box containing approximately 20 Bass over the side of the punt into the water.
The fishermen, who retained a Solicitor to fully contest the offences on their behalf, stated that they were fishing for mullet and had taken the Bass as a by-catch but had not had the opportunity to discard the Bass, which were in the fish box, before the Fishery Officers appeared on the scene.

Judge Olann Kelleher said he was satisfied that both men were guilty. For using a net to catch Bass he fined each man €600 and ordered each man to pay €300 costs. He also made an Order for the Forfeiture of the nets.

Lets hope we see plenty more of this!

To be fair now they have not been around that long (21 years). And looking at the original post maybe they did follow a supplier to market. I don't think the SFPA would have any jurisdiction over there, so fair fecks to them if they did go over there for information gathering purposes. Let's wait and see.

As jd said, the SFPA is only in existence a few short years so give them a chance. Also, the two agencies fulfil very different roles and have very different skillsets and equipment. IFI are equipped with surveillance equipment and patrol boats where SFPA are not. SFPA have very good vessel monitoring and inspection regimes for commercial vessels, which is their primary role.
There is very good co-operation between IFI and SFPA when it comes to enforcing bass legislation. Just because IFI have taken the lead on bass protection doesn't mean SFPA are not doing anything. There is a lot of unseen work in the background to these kinds of prosecutions that most people never hear about.

The anglers here are only too willing to listen.

The law says that bass are a protected species. This was done for good reasons.
Businesses in my locality have invested in angling tourism, in many cases specifically bass angling related tourism. Tourism, and specifically angling tourism, has potential to help the country out of economic difficulty. No angler or tourism business wants to see commercial fishermen out of business. The majority of commercial fishermen do not want to put tourism businesses at risk either. The criminals that are netting & selling bass illegally are in the minority. The fact that these criminals are prepared to shaft others in their community speaks volumes.

are there posters on here with a hidden agenda? donal if there is people signing up under different names is there any way of letting all users know who there conversing with. have these people been banned here under different handles if so perhaps when the sign in all there bogus names should come up or at least mark there names so we know there under different internet names now
