Dingle, Co. Kerry 16-17/02/2012

#1 Post by FMCN »

People:me

Duration:2 night sessions

Tide:weak floods

Weather:moderate westerlies

Bait:fresh lug, razor and mack

Rigs:3/0 pennells

Results:
bass and flounder

Report:
First report in a while. I had a few days free so i decided on a short trip to Kerry. Drove down early on Thursday to arrive mid afternoon and dumped some stuff in the cottage. With moderate westerlies i had decided to try Stradbally but a short stop on the way down and a chat with a guy just finishing a session put paid to that. He had fished the previous night and was back that morning and had blanked on both sessions. Conditions looked perfect but no fish. I then decided on a beach i had fished once before and i knew would also have a nice surf with the prevailing wind. Arrived at about 4.30pm and got setup. Nothing for the firts hour until the tide turned and then the first flounder. As darkness fell the flounder stayed on the feed and i ended up with 6 or 7 all in the mid 30s with best going just about 40. Probably could have had more but i stuck with the 3/0 pennells. In between the flounder managed 2 bass. Nothing enormous with both around the 50cm mark. All caught on fresh lug which i had brought with me and which ran out at 9.00pm when i packed up. Next night i went back to the same beach. Unfortunately my plan to dig more lug at Milltown fell apart when the very weak tide didn't allow me out to the best areas. I had several packs of frozen razor, 1 pack of frozen black lug and some supermarket fresh mack. Fished 4 hours in identical conditions to the previous night and not a bite. So either the fish had mysteriously disappeared or they just liked the fresh lug.
Delighted with the firts session. Not bad for mid February.

Nice one F, no better man..! Nice mild winter could be great for this season.

I'll be down in Dingle the weekend before the Bass closed season, already dreaming of it and a pint in Muprhy's...!!

Just to echo what Denis said, Cobh SAC held one of their light line comps yesterday and on each of the four boats fishing they had over a dozen mackeral. This is the third year on the trot that this has happened in Feb.

Thanks everyone. Hi Eoghan, hope your right. I will get another short trip or two down before the ban but i have a week booked for just after, at end of June.
Someone else reported on here lots of mack being caught in Dingle harbour in the last week as well.

A friend was fishing Dingle Bay last Sunday, the 12th, and he could have filled the boat with macks, they were all sizes from small joeys to massive big things. I note that some of the big Killybegs boats are fishing off the SW at the moment, the very same boats which were fishing Norwegian waters two weeks ago. I would say that it is Macks they are after down there too. Just hope that they do not do the same thing as last year and go somewhere and we are left without any, for the excuse for a summer we had.
