Killiney Beach

#1 Post by Creep »

People: kids and myself

Duration: 3-7pm

Tide: rising

Weather: beautiful

Bait: lug tipped with mac

Rigs: flappers, booms

Results:
It was a trip I been looking forward to and the weather reports weren’t great saying with possible showers and winds from North-west,
But none the less it was a chance for me to take my two eldest kids out and I had the CodCabin so if the weather did turn nasty we all had shelter..
Arrived to Killiney beach set-up the kids and casted out for Serena (5) and Emmet (6) on his new rod as he wasn’t comfortable with the new rod yet, almost straight out from casting the pin whitting surrounded the bait, I had put 1s on the snoods but still these were too big for any hooks ups of the tiny pin whitting about, the sea was flat calm and about 20 feet out I could see two dorsal fins break the surface of the water, they looked like either mullet or schoolie bass, (they weren’t big), at this stage I was still setting up my rods, was toying around going after them but I was with the kids and this is their day at the beach, then Serena's rod (small spin caster) took a knock from a reasonable fish, told her to reel in which she did…almost into the surf and declared she was hungry and went off for a bite to eat leaving the fish on the line?!?! I reeled it in the rest of the way for her and it was a flounder nearly 29cm, :D hey hey first fish of the day.. first thing she said when she saw it can we eat it :D second fish fell to Emmet a small whitting, and then finally I got my lines out and a whitting of 23cm fell to me :D the day went like that which was great, the kids got bored about half way through the day and went playin on the beach which I can still hear myself saying “ Get Away From The Water” (I didn’t want them getting cold, and wet) but an old saying kids will be kids!! Roll on the summer and I don’t CARE if they get wet!!! :D :D last fish of the day was Emmets whitting, Important note: Emmet baited up his own hooks :D and he did cast out a few times on his new rod, a bit more practice and he might join Sportcast Ireland!! :D :D
All in all it was so refreshing to get out and just enjoy the day with the kids! Just on another note the Cod Cabin worked perfectly keeping dogs away from the bait as I closed the door, I did have one very interested Springer Spaniel trying to get in but couldn’t! which was very handy as the owner came slowly over and said …“Oh Sorry about that” I wouldn’t want to fish Killiney on a weekend during the day as the amount of people there on a weekday walking under my lines meant I had to keep and eye on everything!! (I was close to the shore)

Sounds perfect, I was a bit reluctant to bring my two beach fishing together as I had visions of them splashing each other within the first 10 mins and then getting cold and wanting to go home before I could even get my rod our of the bag, the tent and a picnic could be the missing ingredient!

They look like seriously happy kids, so job well done!

Was the rising tide a deliberate plan or did it just fit with the time available? (very novice question I know!)

Are there parts of Killiney that you can't fish or is it just a case of nobody cares as long as it is not summer?

You can fish the whole killiney beach BUt down towards the "tearooms" buildings down the far left can be very snaggy, lure fish there is great though (soft plastics etc once you stay on top to mid water), I like to fish Killiney on a rising tide so I picked that time and the kids had mid term break which was perfect, get yourself a tide table its the most useful piece of kit EVER! if one area doesnt suite and your not afraid to drive, away you go... Another key thing to keep kids happy on the beach is simply a bucket and spade (you'll be suprised what they come up with) Summertime fishing is the easiest way to go and if your mrs don't mind you can go right into the night, I have often brought Emmet with me on Dogfish/Smoothound nights Pitched up a tent incase he felt tired, made him wear a flourcent jacket and headlamp and that way you know where he is when not in the tent, though during the night he stays by my side (afraid of missing anything I suppose :D :D and kids find the whole "Shark" thing way too interesting to miss!! (oh another side note is when you do arrive home they are a sleep ... and you'll get a lie in!!) and the following morning will be all talk of Sharks!! (my sons teacher called me into school once because he told the teacher his dad catches sharks :D:D I arrived to the school in a flotation suite (was heading out fishin) and she told me what my son had said.. and I said ... Yep .. thats true! well the look in the poor womans eye was priceless!! )

During the Summer months You'll get swimmers along Killiney BUT if you go midweek there are less about ;) also there can be Mackerel caught along the shore great for kids, single hook and float a bit of bait out and watch the kids face when the mackerel run away with the float... sometimes its just too funny!! :D :D :D

Thanks for the kind words.. though I did repeat myself (several thousand times STAY OUT OF THE WATER, I think every body that heard me thought I was nuts  ) BUT kids will be kids and I always bring a change of clothes with me in the car just in case ;) and they stay in the car till needed
