Donegal Beach, 28-January-2012

#1 Post by johnwest »

People: Just me

Duration:6.5 hrs

Tide:Low to Full

Weather:Overcast, light rain, light breeze, 3 degrees to 5 as the day wore on.

Bait:Fresh lug, frozen mackerel.

Rigs: 2 and 3 hook flappers.

Results: 4 flounder to 33cm, 1 seatrout at 40cm, 3 whiting from 31-33cm.

Report:
Tide, wind and wave suggested a go at the beach for a few flounder and when first cast produced a 33cm flounder, things were looking good. However baits remained unmolested for the next hour and a half until the seatrout appeared. At this stage I was glad I had brought the i-Pod along as the sound of waves gets a bit monotonous if not accompanied by fish. The thing I like about i-Pods is that you usually get some great music on them! Back to the fishing which was very slow and when a specimen bird's nest occurred, I was down to one rod as I had left the spare reel in the car to reduce weight. As darkness settled a few more bites occurred resulting in another flounder at 25 cm, then a smaller one at 21cm. A few hit-and-run bites then followed and that marked the arrival of the whiting, 3 at 31, 31 and 33cm. These were nice plump fish as nature intended, no signs of anorexic ones tonight. As high tide came, the bites slowed again and I finished the night with a little palm-sized flounder; small but beautifully proportioned. Now where did I put those scissors to deal with that bird's nest......

Thanks Roger, are these wraps frozen or just gutted worms kept in the fridge? I sometimes use frozen lug as a standby and wondered if wraps were different.

Thanks lads, I put almost all my fish back so never get to look at the stomach contents to check the food source.
