Rust on trailer

#1 Post by JacksonPollock »

Hi lads

Im looking for advice. Ive a galvinised boat trailer frame on a steel/iron axel.
Just began working on the trailer for next summer. My Main axel is badly rusted so Ive scraped off all the old loose rust etc.

Question is

What is best treatment or paint to put on to prevent or slow down the rust on a trailer that is used for launching a lot.

thanks for any tips advice

you can get a treatment that reverses the rusting and cures it . Most good hardware stores do it aswell as motorfactors . Can't remember the name i know we stock it. Tec 7 also do a spray like wd40 which seals and protects . tractor paint is cheap and hardwearing

hi i know of a few lads that cleaned down the trailers and got them glavinised diped. it wasnt to expensive , so maybe it would be worth doing the axle . worth lookin into.

I cleaned down a rusted boat trailer 2 year ago and painted it carefully with Hammerite silver paint. It's a sticky heavy paint which looks like galvanize when finished but I have not seen any rust since. I only have used it on freshwater but I think it is probably the best DIY paint on the market and stocked in most hardware shops. Hope this helps!

agree with this but be fore you paint use a wire brush and treat rusted areas with rust killer

Wurth do a zinc based spray that's excellent on trailers.

Fosroc Galvafroid paint. Simply the best for boat trailers.

I'm doing this job myself at the moment.

Image

I just sanded down the hole thing even the wheel hubs.

Fitted new breaks and bearings and painted with rust primer and then a gloss black.

Lowe's rust primer is the best Ive ever used from commercial fishing gear to farming equipment.

two pack aluminium suface tolerant high build primer two coats 150 microns per coat will withstand being dipped in and out of salt water and last about 10 years till first maintance ,clean it down with a power brush and high pressure wash ,the main worry you have is salt under the paint you are wasting any paint you apply if you dont fresh water wash first !
