Petition against oil drilling in Dublin Bay

Apologies if this has been posted already, i had a look but didn't see anything.


There is a petition being setup against the drilling for oil just off Dublin bay.
At the moment they have a facebook page setup and leaflets around the Dalkey area.
The petition itself will be active later on today i think. Hope people can pass this info onto others that may be affected if this goes ahead.

Protect Dalkey Island and Killiney Bay
Description
A massive oil drilling is planned for 6km off the coast of Dublin (directly off Dalkey island) for later in 2012. The plans submitted by the company in accordance with law show that in the event of a major spill, marine life would be fully destroyed for ten years in the surrounding areas, including Dublin Bay. Human fa...talities could occur, and substantial damage to people's health and businesses would occur. We're hoping to get documentation on this page to help find objections to the drilling. It's already been discovered that 5 endangered species inhabit this area, including humpback and fin whales.There is a window for objections before the green light is given by legal authorities. The 2nd of feb is this deadline. Plans can be seen in Dun Laoighre and Dalkey Garda stations, we'll try and get them online here. This page can be used of evidence of public support. So, if you would prefer not to have drilling a couple of miles off the Dublin coast, and want to lend your voice or name, or if you object to drilling for oil in general and favour alternative and sustainable energy use, then like this page.

I dunno.

A few dozen properly run oil rigs would be a considerable hindrance to the trawlers that are ploughing up so much of the seabed and killing off so much of the fish stocks. Did I read recently of some research on rigs in the North Sea providing a sanctuary for marine life, protecting them from commercial exploitation?

Gonna have to think about this one and do some more reading, it may not be all bad news for anglers.

Its easy to jump on the bandwagon where petitions are concerned, but I think its important to understand what is actually going on.

Currently there is a proposal by Providence Resources PLC to allow for survey of the area and drilling of 1 exploratory well.

This is to assertain if there is gas and/or oil present, and then to consider if there is sufficient reserves to warrant commercial extraction.

Not saying I am for or against it, havent time to give it much thought tbh.

Agree with what tanglerat says, research has proven that permanent (5 year +) oil rig installations can have a positive impact on local marine life by providing a safe haven for many different species, there is commonly an exclusion zone set around the rigs that effectively gives many sq miles of sanctuary/protection from fishing boats.

would have to agree with the lads a hard one to decide on.i think if we look at the other venues around the coast might help us decide.if there is oil discovered will it be flogged off for buttons to the multi national oil companies who dont have a great record of looking after our marine enviroment.or is it going to be like the corrib pipe line where we give up our right of way to killiney beach or dalkey? but make no mistake it will bring big restrictions depending on where they land it. the only plus i can see would be to the exchequer yes this country needs the revenue if the rights have not been pawned already

ive watched fishing shows shot in the gulf of mexico and the quality of fishing in and around the oils rigs has to be seen to be believe

That is if our shaggin governement hasnt already given THIS natural resource away!! If it protects and helps fish stocks Im for it... Can you imagine the return of decent Codling on the East Coast?? At present I've seen boom trawler too close to the shore both in Arklow and Greystones

But as Twinkle quite rightly pointed out we have to find out where they plan to land the oil if there is oil to be had... and lets hope it wont be a another BP set-up. If properly managed, and directed we could be on a serious winner... but the way Im feelin about past and present Governments they might as well all be wearing clown suites!!

The chances of striking oil are fairly slim to begin with, but I hope they do - the bigger the oil field the better. It would be a badly needed boost to the economy. A good commercial discovery would stimulate further exploration in our waters (which are seriously under-explored compared to the UK sector), possibly leading to more discoveries. The government will get royalities and there would be many ancillary jobs created during the exploration and development phases.
But alas I would be very doubtful if anything will be discovered from the one eploration well.

i think they have permission for 4 drilling points around dublin bay this is the first one

i dont know if there the only company with a license but i remember talk of 4 drilling points back a few years ago when this first came to light. while this oil drilling is going on there are other drilling points also going on with dublin port http://www.afloat.ie/port-news/dun-laog ... aste-water these could be as damaging as any oil well with out the revenue of course

hmm I read something some time back were (i think it was the States) like that they were drill for Non oil purpose and managed to hit a minor oil field, shocked the hell out of the team drilling but none the less they used what and when they could, there was a minor spill due to the fact they werent expecting it but it was quickly resolved
