W. Waterford 7th & 8th Jan

#1 Post by Stan »

People: Me and Willy

Duration: 3 sessions Saturday and 2 on Sunday

Tide: Various

Weather: almost no wind and very mild.

Bait: Lug, razors, squid, sand eel and fresh crab

Rigs: 2 or 3 up traces

Results: Whiting, Coalies, Flounder & a bass, plaice, ray, coalies

Report Headed to W. Waterford early Sat morning. First had to collect some wonderful crab from John in Youghal :D :D . Billy got some great razor from Roy in Midleton :D :D

Saturday

Session 1: headed to a favourite flounder spot near Youghal from 10.30-14.00. Not a bite :( :( .
Session 2: Headed to Dungarvan to try for a bass 15.00-17.00. Not a bite :( :( .
Then it was home for the dinner.

Back out to a local W Waterford pier at 20.00 -22.00. I used big baits and rigs to try for a ray or conger. Willy had a normal one up one down. He managed to get some nice whiting and a couple of coalies :D :D :D but my plan to get the big one did not work.
22.30- v late we adjourned to the pub with Arthur !! Good man Arthur & thanks for the sore head. You did cause some wind behind me on the beach    .

Sunday

Session 1:decided to try a beach that had a little surf from 10.45-13.30. I never blank on this beach. We both put up 2 rods with crab, lugs and razor.
Second cast I had a definite bass bang and landed a nice fish of about 2.5lb :D :D . Soon afterwards I had a little tap and landed a small flounder :D . The rod had another bang but unfortunately Mr Bass did not swallow the spikey bit!!!

Then it was time to move.

Session 2: There was little surf and so we just chanced a beach on the far side of Dungarvan from 15.00-16.45. Result nothing

Overall the fishing was hard work. The number of fish was well down on normal.
Maybe the flats have moved off to spawn somewhere. The bass are always a little scarce at this time of year.
February is always the worst month for fishing for me as the beaches seem to hold little fish.

Ah well we will be off to Guinea Bissau at the end of February for the best fishing in the world :D :D :D !!!

Nice one Stan, you did well to get a few fish, bet you can't wait for the trip to Guinea-Bissau, looking forward to the report, the fishing there looks awesome. Probably bump into you on a west waterford beach/rock mark in the not too distant future.
Everyone should believe in something; I believe I’ll go fishing.

Fishing on those West Waterford beaches is slow at the moment, but at least you did get a bass - well done.
Last night I was trying for bass myself on one of the beaches that I reckoned you fished but all I could manage were 4 dogfish.
Good luck in Guinea Bissau - are you trying to make us all sick with envy!!

Thanks Declan. No doubt we will cross lines on some beach or rock.

Thanks Beachbuddy.

Suitcase will contain lures and line plus shorts and tea-shirt. No doubt you would show up on the scanner. Not sure what they do to stowaways in Guinea Bissau but I figure you would not enjoy it!!!

Thanks Frank. Reckon it will be March again before the bass show in any numbers but it's still worth wetting a line , just in case.
