Sea trout lures

#1 Post by Potatonator »

Hi
was just curious about sea trout in the april months
what would the best technique be i have some bass flies which have been productive for bass but never tried them on a sea trout mark
also lures would a 3inch plain silver toby do the trick
And finally may sound a bit stupid but having bought some rapalas and used them for pike i can never cast them out far enough as my spinning rod goes from 10-70g whereas these plugs are 4g is it a crap idea to put a ball weight before the lure or would it completely stop its action

i find the best flies for sea trout is by far the silver stoats tail in a size six double fished on its own with a floating line and 9 ft 6lb leader . As far as the spinning you could use an inline lead or maybe go down in real size and line diameter to improve distance but if its only a 4gram plug it still wont go far

Weight before plugs tends to spoil the action abit but try a day where the wind is offshore and cast nice and high so to catch the gusts for an extra bit of distance. Had them on rapala J13's, tazmanian devils, greenfish and fox vibrax minnows before so there's plenty of options out there :) :)

the viva parades are mentioned alot for sea trout but i find the taz or tobys more effective. Maybe im not using them correctly? Do you retrieve fast or slow or what?

Tazmanians, toby rockey, toby original, mepps and jensen pirks. Most succesful in that order. Think the jensens, greenfish, varivas parades are alright where you really need to punch a lure a long way, others have much better action and if your trout aren't at long range then i'd reach for the taz or tobies first. Found the mepps deadly for sea trout and slobs for close range channel work.
Sea Species(25) bass, codling, whiting, turbot, seatrout, stingray, pollock, coalfish, longspine scorpion, ballan wrasse, dogfish, ling, pouting, poor cod, dab, mackerel, smelt, sandeel, launce, bull huss, painted ray, thick lip mullet, golden grey mullet, rock goby.
Fresh Water (2) brown trout, sea trout
