Donegal Bay, 6-1-2012
People:Me and the "apprentice"
Duration:About 4 hours
Tide:Early flood to almost high tide.
Weather:Mild but windy and increasingly wet from showers and spray.
Bait:Mackerel strip.
Rigs:2 and 3 hook flappers
Results:2 flounder and 2 pin whiting.
Report:
First trip of the new year had to be incorporated with a bit of child-minding so the 6 year old Apprentice came along. Started off on a beach, 2nd choice as first choice was a bit messy. The surf here was just about tolerable but no action for about an hour by which time the tide was pushing us up into the boulders. Time for a change of venue so reeled in the 2 rods to find a flounder on each, 26 and 28cm. Between the waves, wind and the odd bit of weed it was impossible to spot any bites; one of the things I dislike about this type of fishing, I just love seeing bites. On to the next mark but the rain and spray were constant and there's only so much that a 6 year old can take so he sat in the car while I struggled on to catch 2 tiny whiting, at least I saw them bite! Not very productive but still great to get out.

Re: Donegal Bay, 6-1-2012
another future professional angler in the making there man
great to see the kid catch a fish! my non angling friends always used to wind me up about taking jordan out in conditions like that when he was that age. they reckoned it was paramount to a form of child cruelty
we just chuckled about it and called them all nancy boys!!
conditioned him into the angler he is today
i know what you mean about not seeing the bites. thats half the fun of it for us. can't beat that feeling you get when you see the tips twitching away, or the heart stopping feeling of seeing your rod get almost pulled off the tripod by something decent

John Love the fact you take your son!! EXCELLENT!!! I take mine when herself lets me last few weeks the wind has been howling and as she said" There's no feckin way your taken him out in that!!"
Last time we headed out it was storm force 11 and near impossible to see any small bites but I did drop the tripod as low as I could faced the back of the reels into the wind and it was just about possible to see the bigger hits.. None the less Im looking forward to taking my kids out again! (when I get the rods back from the repair shop last storm took the rods off the tripod and sent them crashing to earth!!
)
P.s. Rodger DOES look like that... really, when he's reeling in a bass that is his expression!!!!!

Re: Donegal Bay, 6-1-2012
Hi Creep, the Apprentice is actually my grandson, I thought you might have guessed from my portrait! I have 2 daughters who used to love coming out fishing with me .....until the hormones kicked in and from then on I was merely a source of finance, lifts and embarrassment. I'm hoping to get the wee fella trained in lugworm digging, crab gathering, hauling anchors etc before my back seizes up! Sorry to hear about your damaged rods as I know that feeling; last year my own tripod was blown over smashing 5 rings and the tiplight on one rod and 2 rings on the other. Expensive weather this wind.Creep wrote:John Love the fact you take your son!! EXCELLENT!!! I take mine when herself lets me None the less Im looking forward to taking my kids out again!
