Yet more Down Beach fishing 05/01/12

#1 Post by Drew »

People: Dan, Bingham, Drew

Duration: 7pm - 9.30pm

Tide: Pushing to High

Weather: One Skiff of a Shower, Big Moon

Bait: Mackeral, Sandeel, Squid

Rigs: 2up1down, 1up1downs, Loop

Results:

A Flounder Each, A Heap of Whiting

Report:

Another local night and with fishing the beach over HW we knew we'd probably have to make do with a few whiting, but still the lure of the sand was greater than that of the piers, and we arrived full of optimism at 7pm.
Bingham had brought my prize for winning our mini species comp last year, I got a Savage gear Sandeel, 10/0 Meat hooks, Bait Scissors and a king size bag of Tayto cheese and onion! Legend!
Anyway, down to the fishing, within the first half hour we all had Flounders on the fish strip baits, so that was a new species for the year for both Bingham and Myself (Dan had his last time).
After the initial flats the whiting started biting, but not bad beach fish, A few of them in the mid 20's, with the arrival of HW however the weed came on, and most of the fish stopped...

Another good night all the same... :D

i went to blackhead today, not putting up a report as ive written it 3 times and everytime i try to submit it errors and i lose it and the results arent worth the effort, a dozen or so pollock and coalies to low thirties and 1 shore rockling

also a comorant hit my line and pulled rod and tripod into the water, i knew the rod floats from the last time a bird pulled it in up there but who knew the tripod floats as well, got both back in the end

good goin getting afew, reason for blackhead being so poor is likely down to a trawler that towed beteen the lighthouse and cloghan point all da yesterday. the day before he trawled from glenarm to ballygalley all day then went into brownsbay and trawled the whole bay. then he crossed the lough and trawled from groomsport to millise before heading into portavogie. no doubt full to brim!! any wonder there are few fish to be caught

You sure it was nets ghosty? We've had a lot of boys towing off Millisle/Donaghadee recently but they're all the scallop boys, hard to believe it was would productive for someone to fish the mouth of the lough, as well as Copeland sound with the big rock structures around foreland and the other markers? It's been dredged to bits over the past few years mind...

how are you fixed today, do you fancy a run up the antrim coast with us this afternoon man?

as for the trawler up the antrim coast, i got speaking to an oul fella in portmuck 2 years ago who said he watched one do the exact same thing. shot his nets at the mouth of larne lough and headed out towards muck island
no wonder the fishing is crap after one of those things does it's work
