Ennereilly and Greystones Harbour, 27th December

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me, Fishface, Mitch and Ringo

Duration:Only some of us endured

Tide:low, then rising,,but not much

Weather:windy with a capital W on the beach,,,just a small w in the Harbour(at times  )

Bait:lug, mack and squid

Rigs:flappers

Results:1 rockling on the beach and 2 doggies in the harbour

Report:With an overload of turkey in my system, I took the brave decision to venture many miles from a comfortable toilet and headed to Ennereilly beach, where if you were to believe the signs you can expect Bass, codling, whiting, flounder and dogfish etc etc   . The lads were already set up and I went down to say hello before setting up myself. It was fine in the shelter of Mitch's 4x4 but once I stepped outside it was like a wind tunnel. I got set up,,,then first and second casts ended up tangling in Mitch and Fishfaces line down the other end of the beach, such was the strong run of tide and wind   . To avoid further embarassment, I stood on the edge of the water with rod in hand until the grips were set and felt for a bite. I eventually felt a gentle pluck and reeled in a rockling , blank saved  . After an hour, Neil had enough and headed for some home comforts, but not before giving me some fine lug, and a mack. Us hardier souls foolishly stayed on, but eventually Mitch and Ringo left for the shelter of Greystones Harbour. I stayed for further punishment but didnt get any further bites. I noticed a car pulling up beside my van and some people got out. I was a bit worried so I ran over (a brisk walk might be a more accurate description  ) and turned my headlamp on them to see what they were up to :?: There were 2 lads stumbling about and another 3 in the car. I kept the light fixed on them , saying "Howya lads, what are yis up to?",,,,,,,,,,but they just muttered something and got back in the car and humped off. I dont think they were doing anything to the van, maybe they just had an overdose of turkey as well and were caught short :? :? ,,,,,,,,,,but anyways it made my mind up to get outa there as I couldnt relax  .
I headed for Greystones Harbour and soon was back in the good company of Mitch and Ringo  . Not as windy here, and it wasnt long before I had a bite, a doggie taken on lug. I was happy to see him hauled up the wall as I had lost a nice fish here last time when my leader knot gave  . Not a bite after this for another hour, then Mitch and Ringo called it a day. I again decided to foolishly stay on,for although I had another doggie, this time on mack,I had to endure a half hour with the pensioner from hell and his wife, who fired questions at me at 100 miles an hour, never giving me time to answer before going to the next question. Worst of all was his habit of saying goodbye,,,,,,,,,only to stay and tell me more of his experiences fishing in Minnesota in the Good 'Ol U.S. of A. I can safely say I havent met a more annoying ******(person) in a long time. When he left I did some of my breathing exercises to calm down, then packed up and went home
. It's all part of fishing I suppose   . Happy New Year to you all and hope to see yis in 2012.
Dave
