Hard fighting boxing day, Co Down Beach Fishing 26/12/11

#1 Post by Drew »

People: Dan and Drew

Duration: 5pm - 8.30pm

Tide: Over low

Weather: 13'c, Mild n gusty

Bait: Lugworm, Crab and Mackeral

Rigs: Loops, 1 up 2 down, 2 up 1 down

Results:

Loads of Small whiting and flounder, Half a Dozen larger flounder (30 to 36cm), 5 Bearded Rockling, 2 Dogfish, About half a dozen bigger whiting (25cm'ish), Half dozen or so Coalies maxing out at an impressive 45cm...

Report:

I never thought I'd have a night like this on a Co. Down beach, Dan and I arrived for around 4.45pm and made our way onto the beach, found a little drain of fresh running in, so decided this was as good a place as any to start. Fishing one close and one slightly further is always a good place to start on beaches you have no experince on, Dan did something the same, and as the last of the light faded the Whiting came out to play. Regular rattles and a few small fish soon had us content and settling into a rhythm, the first variety coming with a 20cm+ Coalfish each, superb, we were having great fun!

Then as we approached lw the Flounders well and truely came on the feed for me, loads of them, a few of which were a repectable stamp, and the best being 36cm, only a couple of cm short of a PB! Meanwhile Dan was cleaning up on the chunky Whiting, certainly better than Bangor pier standard and welcome in numbers! He also dragged out 2 respectable dogfish! As the tide started to push more heavily we had a few more whiting and flounder, mostly in doubles, A gulley seemed to be forming right at my feet, and I decided to investigate plonking a bait no more than 3 meters out into about 1.5ft of water, good call as the M4 started bucking in the tripod! Thought certain it was a seatrout, attracted by the fresh, it kited left and ploughed a good 15-20ft down the beach! It HAD to be a seatrout, right?? "Dan, DAAAAAAAN, GET OVER HERE", and just as Dan arrived, it broke surface, bloody Coalfish, but a cracker for a beach fish.... A few more whiting and we decided to call it quits... Looks like christmas came a day late... 8)
