West Waterford 8th & 9th Dec.

#1 Post by Stan »

People: Me , Tom, Jim, Willie, Bob

Duration: Thursday 11.00-16.00 and 22.00- 01.00 Friday 11.30-13.30

Tide: Rising

Weather: V strong SW wind that eased off.

Bait: Lug, razors and frozen crab

Rigs: 2 or 3 up traces

Results: Flounders, bass, codling, plaice, ray, coalies :D :D

Report: The plan was hatched last week to go bass fishing to W Waterford on Thursday. Lug was ordered. Fresh crab was not available through normal contacts   and so we had to settle for frozen ones. I also had some frozen razor in the freezer.
The weather forecast on Wednesday was terrible. …rain and v strong winds up to force 9. One of the lads rang me to say that a storm was forecast. It takes more than a storm to stop me fishing in this area as there is always somewhere that can be fished with the large number of beaches.
Various traces were made up for different types of fishing.
With the wind howling the first point of call was to the Blackwater estuary to try for some flounders and maybe even a cod or a bass. First flounder went to Tom with a fine fish of 43cm. :) :)
W Waterford 1 Dec 2011.jpg
Then Jim had 3 in succession between 33-39 cm :) :) and finally Willie had one 38cm. :) :) All were taken on lug with the crab being totally ignored.

Although there were only 5 fish caught they were all fabulous fish.

Then it was off to the Quays bar in Youghal for a bit of warm grub and a pint before returning to Ardmore for a rest . The wind had begun to die down. At 21.00 we set off for another local beach. Conditions were absolutely perfect with a beautiful rolling surf absolutely screaming fish.

I decided to fish 2 rods, 1 at distance for painted ray. Reports of some being caught the previous week had been heard along the grapevine. The second rod was to be fished at the 3rd wave for bass.

The bass rod was cast out first with lug on the top hook and razor on the bottom pennel. The second rod had a sliding, clipped down rig , with a lug / razor cocktail on the pennel hooks. Just as I let fly with full force the leader snapped off   and the trace dropped into the water about 50 yards out. Jim later wound this in with a flounder on it.

The bass rod then gave a nod and in came a nice coalie about 1lb in weight :) :) . I then decided to fish the bass rod at distance. No sooner had the bait hit the water then bang and the rod bent over. This was definitely a heavy fish and tested the rod to its max. Willie went down to see what was coming in and shouted “ray” . A beautiful painted ray of 8lb was my “fish of the day” :) :) :) :) . It had taken lug.
W Waterford 4 Dec 2011.jpg
Next it was Willie’s turn as his rod bent into a fine cod of 4.5lb. :) :)
W Waterford 5 Dec 2011.jpg
Soon after Jim’s had his first bass ever :) :) . It only took him 4 trips to get one!!!! A silver bar about 2lb in weight was his reward.

I had 3 more coalies with 1 being a good size.

Willie was in action again with a good rod bender of a bass. A fine plump 3lb fish in perfect condition was landed :) :) . It was the only fish taken on the razor

We finished up at 01.30.

Again while we did not have a huge number of fish but the quality was good everyone went home happy   . We had 5 species. The lug was gone. Not one fish showed any interest in the frozen crab :!: :!: .

Next morning we were up early to dig bait. What started off as a fine surf soon disappeared to a sea of glass and we caught nothing. Most of these surf beaches produce little when it is flat calm and so it was time to head back to Dublin.
