Irish Trawler in Rad Bay 8th Dec 2011

#1 Post by kerrywez »

Did not know where to put this and as we have had a discussion here about the lack of fish in Red Bay I thought I would post it here, if it is deemed to be in the wrong place could some kind mod please move it for me.

For all you guys who are not catching anything in Red Bay, I have something for you to have a look at. I was looking at one of my fav sites and found the trawler fishing away, he was doing 3.3 knots so was almost certainly towing. Is it any wonder that there are not the fish there used to be in the bay. Her latest position is in the bay I am about to take another screen grab of her and let you see where she is. As a point of interest the site where I found her is http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/defaul ... level0=100

Any fish she can catch will be worth very big money as the trawlers have not been able to fish very much this last few weeks and when she lands she will have a big pay day. If you go to Killybegs on the map and zoom in you will find that the vast majority of the fleet are tied up in port, one, the Antarctic was making a run for home last night but was forced to lie up in the lee of the Hebrides. I have one more screen grab i am going to post and that will be it.

Thought I needed to add this screen grab to this thread, my reason is that she stopped squaking her position at 22:06 and that grab was taken at 22:21 so she is not reporting her right position and the course she was on would have her fishing the Lade shore by now.

there will be slim pickings out there. too many years of that caper have surely rendered commercial fishing in Red Bay futile!!

i really am not a big fan
i hope she gets a net full of dogs and rocks

(and i really cant believe that that boat is out in that weather!)

The weather is completely savage out there, the boat might be sheltering? Many boats do shelter in Redbay during high winds, on the other hand it might be fishing on the fly during bad conditions, I really dont know?

The only thing I can think of theyd be after out there at present would be herring????????? Buck all else there.

Kerrywez, I had nothin else to do so I just drove up Layde road. The boat is sitting at anchor with all its lights on about half a mile off Port Obe, which is just at the south end of the Layde shore. Its not presently fishing and my best guess is its just anchored for the night to sit out the wind.

Dunno where its going, by the looks of those pics you put up it has come in round Garron point to the south and is sheltering close to the Layde shore. What they would hope to catch in Redbay if they actually were fishing I really do not know.

I doubt they are after herring as I suggested above, surely theyd need a very fine mesh net for that but whatdo I know about wot theyre at?

I really think they are sheltering for the night, the weather is brutal.

Just had a look at that marinetraffic website link you posted, its very interesting, for whatever reason that boat still isnt giving its location, God only knows why, maybe theyre closer to the shore than theyre supposed to be, but they seem to be at anchor, maybe theyre just on the piss? Lol.

Port Obe is directly below Layde Church, you are probably well aware of that, I dont envy them bein out there in that weather.

He's just sheltering. Ardglass was full of boats that night doing the same so he'd nowhere else to go.

marine traffic is a great site for spotting trawlers athough alot of them dont even show up on it. too many years of trawling the north irish coast has left it in the state its in. 15 years ago me and my da would have fished around redbay and caught loads of plaice around 2lb with some bigger and some crackin codling about 4lb. nowadays your lucky to even see a plaice and the codling are no bigger than fish fingers... sign of the times!!!!
